A waxy, petrol-like character initially wafts from the glass of this wine, followed by notes of bitter melon, spiced orange and mealy apple flesh. The palate is medium in weight, but shows good acidity and a lightly toasty note that works in harmony. There's a subtle texture too, with notes of wood-grilled apple and peach pit lingering on the close. Lauren Buzzeo

Notes of cream, lemon and newly sawn wood open this full-bodied example from one of the brands that helped launch the popularity of Pays d'Oc varietal wines. The lush palate shows some lemon and pear notes with just a hint of mineral on the finish. Drink up.

A hint of butteriness, grilled nuts and ripe peaches give this wine a bit of California-esque quality. It's plump and ripe in the mouth, then turns a bit tart and metallic on the finish.
2001 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004
Flowery, pungent and powerful, with a good level of perfume, sweet pear aromas and outright appeal. A nicely fruited palate with roundness and creamy undertones leads you to a finish of sweet citrus and grapefruit. With a full mouthfeel and clean, bold flavors, this is a winner in its class.
A beautifully done entry-level Chardonnay with good fruit, not rendered too sweet or too oaky. Nice mouthfeel-even a bit of elegance. A clean finish with unexpected length. All you can ask for in Chardonnay at this price.

Precise quality management
Internationally famous, Chardonnay is a white grape that expresses itself in a distinctive manner in the Pays d'Oc region. This wine comes from selected parcels from our various partners in the area, all of which are Terra Vitis-certified. The Mediterranean climate and wide diversity of soil types help this wine reveal its bold character and rich, complex aromatic structure: • Aude and the Thau lagoon area: richness and volume • North of Béziers area: structure and freshness
Maison Castel know-how
The Maison Castel team closely monitors vinification following strict specifications. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration on skins give this wine its varietal character. It is then aged with staves (one of the best ways to impart an oaked profile) for six to eight months to bring out the grape's aromatic expression. Lees stirring gives this Chardonnay structure, good balance and length.
