Does mazda cx 9 require synthetic oil

Jan 14, 2020

Oil changes are one of the most straightforward regular maintenance services needed for your Mazda CX-9. Even if this is your first vehicle, you’re probably familiar with how oil changes work—and the potential consequences of avoiding them. No matter your car’s age, you can only go so long without changing your oil and replacing the filter. Our Mazda dealer near San Antonio can help.

When should I change my oil?

This is one area that doesn’t change much between new model years. Sure, your 2020 Mazda CX-9 can go longer without an oil change than a model from ten years ago, but unless you have an electric car, you’re going to need one sooner or later. With the new Mazda, you can go about 5,000 miles without changing your oil. This works out to align with other types of service, like tire rotation and disc brake maintenance.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 uses 5W-30 synthetic oil, which helps it run smoother and longer, even if you do a lot of driving. That said, don’t wait for the oil light to come on before you check your oil or get it changed. You don’t want a clogged filter or low oil.

Putting off an oil change can create major—and costly—problems, so pay attention to your mileage and any issues with your car like exhaust smoke or a burning smell from the engine. If your oil light does come on, check your oil to make sure you’re still in the safe zone before you keep driving.

If your Mazda CX-9 is racking up the miles and needs service soon, come to Ingram Park Mazda near San Antonio. Our Mazda dealer and technicians dedicate time to ensure that your vehicle is running correctly before we send you back out on the road.

I know this not to be true, so it just makes me wonder about the competency of these dealerships as I've heard others talk about what their dealers say. There's a thread on here where a dealer said you CAN'T use synthetic in the 2nd gen CX-9. Obviously not true either. Dealers are supposed to be able to fix anything, yet they don't know basic things like this?

I went in planning on switching to synthetic so I didn't bother starting a conversation with the service person. I'm even sure that the CX-9 ships with conventional oil and here they're telling me synthetic is required.

So I wanted to get a sense of what other's dealers have said about this.

I'm only 5-days into ownership of a 2019 CX-9, but I am getting my ducks in a row here...I always like to carry a spare quart of oil in the in my cars, and enough for an oil change in my garage at all times.

The Owner's Manual on the CX-9 with the 2.5L SkyActiv-G Turbo just recommends 5W-30 oil...so I am looking synthetic. I'm not exactly sure what Mazda puts in at the factory, but it's got a turbo, and my experience with turbocharged engines tells me to use a synthetic oil. Mazda's only requirement is API certified for gasolines engines, and they "recommend" Castrol...or at least Castrol gave them the most money to "recommend" their oil.

I've used a fully synthetic AMSOIL 5W-40 in my MINI for years now, so I looked at AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic, but at $50/gallon & $13/quart...it ain't cheap.

It looks like I can get 1.25 gallon jugs of Castrol EDGE 5W-30 Synthetic for $25-30. I suppose that should be perfectly acceptable, considering it's Mazda's "recommended" oil brand.

But I'm just curious what my fellow CX-9 owners out there are using?

What type of oil does a Mazda CX 9 take?

Use SAE 5W-30 engine oil. For maintenance service, Mazda recommends Mazda Genuine Parts and Oil.

What happens if you use standard oil instead of synthetic?

Answer. Synthetic oils typically provide better protection than conventional oils, but switching back and forth between full synthetic and conventional oil will not damage the engine. Of course, this depends on the current engine condition and the quality of the conventional oil being used.

Can I use regular oil instead of synthetic?

Can You Use Regular Oil after Synthetic Oil? Both synthetic and regular oil has the same application, and thus you can use regular oil after synthetic oil. People have had the misconception that when you start using synthetic oil, you cannot go back to regular oil, which is just but a myth.

Is synthetic oil really necessary?

Is synthetic oil better for my engine than conventional oil? Yes, synthetic oil is better for your engine than conventional oil. Although conventional oil (i.e., mineral oil) can provide adequate lubrication performance, it can't compete with the overall engine performance and protection provided by synthetics.
