Hello ladies - I am 29 weeks and have had contractions for the last month. I went to the hospital to be monitored this weekend and the dr did the FFN test. I had actually had 2 previously that we're negative so I just assumed this one would be as well but it was positive. I know this test is a better predictor with a negative result but just wondering if anyone has had it done with a positive or negative result and when they delivered???

What happens after a positive fetal fibronectin test?

A positive fetal fibronectin test is a clue that the "glue" has been disturbed and you're at increased risk of premature birth within seven days. However, keep in mind that research hasn't shown this test to improve outcomes immediately before and after childbirth.

How accurate is a fetal fibronectin test?

Combination of fFN and cervical length does not seem to increase the predictive accuracy of both tests taken separately. A positive fFN testing increases the individual PTB probability from 7.5% to 66.1%, due to its high positive likelihood ratio of 24, whereas a negative test decreases it to 2.4%.

How Long Can preterm labor be delayed?

Tocolytics are medications used to delay delivery, sometimes for up to 48 hours. If delivery is delayed even a few hours, it may allow more time to give corticosteroids or magnesium sulfate. This delay also may allow time for transfer to a hospital with specialized care for preterm babies. When are tocolytics given?

How many weeks can you do a fFN?

Fetal fibronectin should not be detectable in vaginal fluids between the 22nd and 35th weeks of pregnancy. If fFN is positive, a women's risk of preterm delivery is increased over the next 7-14 days.
