Whirlpool washer will not agitate but will spin and drain

Model Number WTW5200VQ2 Brand Whirlpool Age More than 10 years

I have been going deeper and deeper into this washer for the last week, each trip to the parts store seeming to take longer than the last.
The unit will not agitate. I mean, it baby-agitates moving about 1/8 inch either way. the action is very weak.
I replaced the agitator dogs.. they make great contact, and when I rotate the agitator assembly counterclockwise, it will catch and rotate the lower agitator part.. clockwise with my hand and it spins freely. I assume this is normal.
so that changed nothing...
replaced the motor coupler.. old one looked ok, but didnt change the situation at all.
I replaced the entire clutch assembly, the drum/spring/ring/pads/ and part that goes on the tub all came in a kit... replaced all that, nothing changed.

I'm not sure what to check next.. I read the agitator thrust washer might be the culprit.. i looked at at it and it LOOKS ok.. not that I know what to look for. but it has ok-looking teeth, not cracked etc the teeth angle seems consistant and the length of the teeth are 3/16' or so..

What is the next logical thing to look for in this situation?
The spin cycles works fine and drains the water completely etc.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, Im new. My name is Pete.

Hi Pete,

It sounds like the transmission is the problem. Take the agitator off so you can see the splines on the shaft and start the washer. See if you can hold the transmission shaft with your hand around the splines.

The agitator shaft should be moving fast back and forth unless you have it in slow agitate. The reason to hold your hand on it is to make sure it doesn't stop agitating with your hand holding onto it.

Here's the transmission for your model:

is there a gear replacement kit for this? I've been snooping around youtube and I saw a guy say "neutral drain" kit.
I will try your test tomorrow, just trying to get parts on order tomorrow also..maybe Ill have this fixed after the holiday.....

I think the neutral drain kit is only if it WONT SPIN.

Yours is not agitating, I don't know if there is a gear kit to replace that, I ALWAYS just replace the whole gearcase assembly.

I can ask Rick if there is a gear kit you can replace for not agitating.

It could have a worn cam follower or spring and the neutral pack won't fix it:

Thanks Rick!

So he would need this part:

That part is over $100 alone, it would be better to spend a little more to get the complete assembly wouldn't it?

You're absolutely correct. He will come out money ahead by just replacing the transmission. It's hard to say exactly what the problem is without taking it apart first or it's pretty much just guessing. I was looking at the neutral pack and trying to see if there was a way something in there could keep it from agitating. If the pawl stud sheared off I think it possible. I wouldn't order any parts without taking the trans apart first and finding the problem.

Why is my washing machine spinning but not agitating?

If your washer won't agitate but spins, a broken agitator may be to blame. The agitator is the centerpiece in a top load washer that agitates and moves the clothes through the water during the wash cycle. The output shaft of the transmission is splined to the agitator to secure it in place.
