So for about 6 months I had my SES light come on, but no problems. So I think nothing of it, and ignore the light. Just recently my car starting have problems, where it would stall out randomly when I was in neutral. It also starting to have a problem accelerating smoothly, which it randomly jerks the car when I am accelerating. So I run a test on the SES light and find out it is the crankshaft positioning sensor. I buy and replace the crankshaft positioning sensor. Than I Rebooted the ECM so the SES light would go away and to make sure the problem was fixed. So after that the car works great, about 30miles after i replaced the sensor, it starts having the same symptoms except this time the problems happen more frequently. The SES light turned back on, and is reading the same code. :wtf:I am really confused and think that the sensor i purchased was a defected product, but I figure Id ask the professionals on this great nissan site, if they could lend a bit of advice on what to do. I appreciate any that reply with feedback. Thank you for your time

When replacing these sensors, both the cam and crank sensors should be replaced. Your vehicle was likely recalled for problems with these sensors. Did you check with Nissan to see if your vehicle had an open campaign? If it is, the repairs would have been done for free. Also, when the SES light comes on, it's best to have the code checked rather than just keep on driving the vehicle and risk potentially worse damage.

Have to agree^
You can buy the sensor kit (both sensors) cheaper than buying them separately!

That's true. Kit for the 2002 SE-R is 23731-6N225. Another reason for checking for open campaigns is that there is a voluntary recall for stalling issues on the 2002 SE-R. Fix is an ECM update and and idle air volume relearn. Contact your Nissan dealer or the Nissan customer service hotline (1-800-NISSAN-1) with your VIN # to have them check.

Just pulled this same code (P0335) on my 04 Spec. My light only came on 2 days ago and I'm not having any stalling yet. And yes, I will check with my local dealer to see if there's any recalls regarding this. If not though, I'm just wondering if this is an easy diy job to replace the sensor(s) or not?? Any input would be helpful, thanks!

Nevermind... Googled it. Looks simple enough.

I have had my krankshaft sensor replaced due to engine management light being on but the same problem is occurring -the car jerks on acceleration. I have a Nissan almera 2001 1497cc. The engine management light remains on

miss fire on my nissan versa

hello I have a Nissan versa and I have a problem I replaced the spark plugs and coil pack and it still have a code 302 cylinder 2 miss fire and can not figure what it is please help me thank you julie

The Nissan Frontier utilizes a crankshaft position sensor in order to regulate the engine timing. This sensor uses a reluctor to gauge the position of the crank. When the Frontier’s ECM determines that there is an issue with the signal coming from this sensor, it’ll throw the P0335 trouble code.

P0335 Symptoms: Nissan Frontier

Depending on the model year and engine of any vehicle the job of the crankshaft sensor is going to change. It’s either going to provide info to the ECM to keep the vehicle from misfiring. Or, it’ll provide necessary data to keep the engine timing in order.

Depending on whether or not the engine timing is dependent on the crank sensor is going to determine whether the symptoms of P0335 are going to be:

  • Vehicle won’t start at all (timing dependent)
  • Rough running motor

Often, if the crankshaft sensor or wiring itself is bad, there won’t be any RPM reading form the tachometer.

Frontier P0335 Causes

Most of the time, the crankshaft sensor is going to be the cause of P0335, or the wiring will be at fault. There are other causes as well. There’s more on that directly below.

Bad Crank Sensor

The crankshaft sensor is often the reason that P0335 is thrown. They aren’t very expensive, but they can be difficult to get to in order to service them. If you think you’re up to the challenge (and know how to use a volt meter) this guide from doityourself.com will show you exactly how to test the sensor.

Reluctor Ring

The crank sensor operates by scanning a “reluctor wheel”. This wheel can become damaged over time and will no longer give a proper reading to the ECM.

One of the most common symptoms of a bad reluctor ring is going to be a rattling sound. If the engine still runs, you will hear it. This means that it has been damaged, and no longer seated properly.

If you don’t hear a rattle, the ring could have broken or missing teeth. This will cause the vehicle to not get a good reading from the crank sensor.

Wiring Issues

Due to the location of the crankshaft position sensor, it is prone to damage. Start by inspecting the wiring harness between the firewall and crank sensor for any obvious damage. After that it would be prudent to look at the wiring harness plug at the sensor itself.

This YouTube video shows exactly how to test the wiring integrity.

Less Likely Reasons

Most of the time, the reasons outlined above are going to be the problem. But, not always. Here are some issues that are (not quite as) known to cause P0335 in the Frontier

Timing Belt/Chain– It is possible that a vehicle that has jumped timing is throwing the code. Here’s more on diagnosing a bad timing chainfrom this site.

PCM/ECM– When the vehicle’s ECM goes bad, it can throw false trouble codes. This is definitely not the place to start, but is worth looking at if nothing else seems to be wrong. Symptoms of a bad ECM (Autoblog).

Conclusion

Good luck determining what is causing P0335 in your Frontier. If you feel like there is anything you would like to add, please leave a comment below.

What are the symptoms of a failed crankshaft position sensor?

Common signs of a faulty crankshaft position sensor include issues starting the vehicle, intermittent stalling, and the Check Engine Light coming on.

What is the most common problem with crankshaft sensor?

Hard-starting, start-stalling or no-start conditions are all more noticeable symptoms, but might not be accompanied by DTCs referring to crank sensor issues. A failing CKP sensor can cause hesitation and poor power upon acceleration.
