55 south diners drive ins and dives

FRANKLIN – Getting a seat at downtown Franklin restaurant 55 South might get a little tougher after Christmas week when it will be one of the featured restaurants on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” show.

The show will air at 9 p.m. Dec. 30 and 55 South is celebrating with $5 margaritas. It will air again Jan. 7.

“It’s a blessing and it’s terrifying,” said Sharon Davis, manager. “We’re already slammed.”

Owner and chef Jason McConnell cooked three dishes with show host Guy Fieri the first day of filming: the hot chicken sandwich, chargrilled oysters and jambalaya. A second day and third day, a crew shot more cooking, food closeups and outdoor shots. All that will boil down to about seven minutes on the show, Davis said.

For three days in October, the restaurant shut down for filming and was allowed to invite 20 regulars.

“We have a really cool group of regulars,” said Davis. “We fed them drinks and food and Fieri and the producer did interviews.”

McConnell also owns Red Pony, his first restaurant that he opened in 2006. He also owns Cork and Cow, which shares a divided kitchen with 55 South, each restaurant with its own line.

55 South refers to the interstate that connects Memphis and New Orleans. Jason McConnell has brought the cuisine you’ll find traveling down that road to downtown Franklin. The dining room has rustic Southern charm with weathered wood and reclaimed materials.

55 SOUTH

We encourage you to visit Franklin when you're in the state to check out this fresh, tasty and different all around diner that serves up plenty of variety. The chef moved away from the politics scene to open up a restaurant. It's a great combo of country and Memphis with some hot Cajun! They are famous for their Hot Chicken Sandwich on white bread, amazingly tender with a nice crunch. Also try the Chargrilled Oysters, loaded with cheese and garlic butter or the Jambalaya!
