Ash blonde hair color on black hair

You can only dye your hair from black to ash blonde without bleaching if your hair has previously been dyed. If your hair is naturally black, unfortunately, you will have to bleach it.
  • If your hair has been dyed black, you should only use clarifying shampoo, which will remove black pigments from hair, until it reaches a light brown shade.
  • The last step is to apply the most suitable ash blonde dye for your hair, and here I’ll tell you how to choose it.
  •

In this case, the difference between a dyed black hair and a natural one is fundamental to know if you can take it to ash blond without bleaching.

    Do you know why?

To remove the natural pigments from hair, we must, unfortunately, use specific products, such as the bleaching mixture,  to be able to penetrate the hair cuticle and extract the color pigments.

However, if you have colored hair, the pigments are artificial. They were deposited when you colored your hair. Therefore, in those cases, it’s enough to use a clarifying shampoo to wash out the pigments.

    Is your hair naturally black?

Then, the best thing you can do is go to a stylist. Bleaching is a very aggressive chemical process that can cause irreparable damage. She will know how long and how many sessions of bleaching you need for that drastic change in color.

Even in salons, complementary products, such as Olaplex are used, for bleaching to be less aggressive.

But, if your hair is dyed black, you can use a clarifying shampoo, which is ideal for removing persistent colors such as red or black.

Also, it is harmless for hair and you can apply it several times in a row, which will give you the possibility to see, what shade your hair is reaching during the process.

Once you reach the right shade, you can apply the ash-blonde dye immediately after using the clarifying shampoo.

All this process can be done at home, without any risk to your hair.

So, are you ready to make the big change?

From dyed black to ash blonde, step by step

Ash blonde hair color on black hair

Black is a hair color that many women choose because it is simple to maintain, the growth is not as noticeable as in blondes and it looks good with any type of skin, any look, and at any age.

However, unfortunately, black dye is a one-way ticket, because it is one of the strongest pigments. Therefore, it is more difficult to remove from the hair fiber.

The color palette has a numeric scale ranging from 1 (black) to 10 (platinum blonde), with black being the darkest shade in the palette.

Do you know what number the ash blond is on that number scale?

Depending on the type of blonde we are talking about, as it can be more or less light, it is the number 7.1 or 8.1 or 9.1.

This means that, in order to get to the ash blonde, you must go up 6 shades. That’s one thing.

In addition, black is the color that contains the pigments of all the other shades. What does this mean?

It means that in order to completely remove black from your hair, you must go through several shades first, and red and orange are just some of those shades. That’s why I told you before that black is a one-way ticket. Black dye is very difficult to remove.

Difficult, yes. Impossible, no. Thanks to the big brands there is a product that can facilitate the removal of black dye, and its name is clarifying shampoo.

Clarifying shampoo works by removing all the artificial color you have applied to your hair. It doesn’t damage the hair fiber, because it doesn’t contain peroxide or ammonia, and you can use it several times.

Do you want to know how to use a clarifying shampoo?

I’ll explain it to you, but first let me give you a  recommendation: don’t apply the clarifying shampoo while you’re taking a shower. It’s better if you just focus on your hair and then take a shower.

Also, don’t be afraid if you notice that the clarifying shampoo has a rather strong aroma.  This is characteristic of the product in some brands. It doesn’t mean it’s spoilt or past its sell-by date

    How to use clarifying shampoo:

    • Comb your hair, untangle it completely.
    • Wet your hair and apply the clarifying shampoo, leaving it on according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This will usually take 10-20 minutes.
    • After the exposure time, rinse your hair with warm water and remove excess water with a towel.

    Now watch your hair.

If it no longer has any traces of black and is in a light brown shade (6) you can apply the dye you have chosen.  In a few minutes, I will tell you how to choose the perfect shade for you.

Otherwise, you can wash your hair again with clarifying shampoo until it reaches the light brown shade.

One very important point.  If your hair has shades in the red or orange range, it means you still have traces of black dye in your hair. That’s why it’s very important that you repeat the clarifying shampoo process as many times as you need to.

That way, the ash-blond shade will look much better. Speaking of the ash-blonde shade, do you want to know which one will be best for you? That’s what I’ll tell you next.

How to choose the best ash blonde shade

Ash blonde hair color on black hair

Once you’ve removed all the black dye, you can apply the ash blonde.

As I told you before, ash blonde is number 7.1. That number 1 indicates the color of the reflection or secondary shade. Therefore, the ash shades will always include the number 1.  In the blonde range, you can find numbers 7.1, 8.1, 9.1.

Now, what if you’ve reached a light brown, and you still get reddish or orangey tones?

In that case, I recommend that you apply an iridescent/pearly dye that is identified by number 2. In your case, the possibilities would be 7.2, 8.2, 9.2.

The secondary number .2 is violet/purple, which is the color that completely neutralizes the orange tones.

Here is a list of possible shades, according to your base color:

    • If your hair is medium brown 5, you can apply light brown ash 1
    • If your hair is light brown 6, you can apply ash blonde 1 or pearl/iridescent blond o 7.2 ash blonde o 8.1 pearl/iridescent blonde 8.2
    • If your hair is light blonde 7, you can apply: ash blonde 1 or pearl iridescent light blonde 8.2 or very light ash blonde 9.1 or very light pearl iridescent blonde 9.2

As you can see, I added light brown ash 6.1 to the list, because this color can be used as a base for further shades.

If you don’t know what your base color is, go to a hairdresser’s and ask for a coloring kit. Then, place a lock of your hair on the kit photo until you find the one that matches.

Remember that number, which will be your base color and will help you choose your ideal ash blonde shade

    Conclusions

You can dye your black hair any color without bleach. Light brown, red, dark red, blue, magenta, purple, and even lighter colors, like blonde, are possible without bleach. Just because you're not using bleach, it doesn't mean that you can't achieve your desired shade. What is this?

Does ash blonde dye work on dark hair?

The quick answer. No. If you apply blonde hair dye on dark hair, you will never reach a blond hair colour. You will however damage your hair from the chemicals in hair dye and risk ending up with dry, brassy, straw-like hair.
