Best moisturizer to use with tretinoin reddit

I’ve heard good things about the Neutrogena hydro boost, but I personally use Clinique Moisture Surge gel-cream. They’re very similar. I almost got the Neutrogena, but after looking up comparisons of the two, the Clinique outperformed across a few categories.

It’s more expensive, but it’s another option if someone wants to spend a little bit more. I’ve been using it for a while now and highly recommend it.

Edit: question about the baume: how do you use it? As in where does it fit in the layers of the skin routine? I’ve been on tret (0.05%) for about a week and my skin is moisturized but it just..hurts :(

I have sensitive and dry skin and I always follow tret with hyaluronic acid, rosehip seed oil, cera ve moisturizer, and finally Aquaphor healing ointment. Seems overkill but it’s kept me from peeling and losing my moisture barrier.

ETA: you say you have super dry and red skin, I would really work on getting your moisture barrier solid before you start tret. I still had some irritation when I started it, and you really don’t want to destroy that- it can take a while to build back up. I’d also recommend a hydrating cleanser (I used cera ve hydrating cleanser) and pull back on any other exfoliation while you get used to tret (physical and chemical.)

I used Differin/tret for 1.5 years before I stopped buffering.

favorite moisturizers

-Hada Labo Premium Lotion (thicker liquid)

-Hada Labo Regular Lotion (liquid)

-Hada Labo Plumping Gel cream (thick cream)

-ELF super hydrate moisturizer (dries quick- favorite for warmer months)

-CORSX advanced snail 92 all in 1 (thick/goopy/sticky)

-CORSX hyaluronic acid intensive cream (thick/not sticky)

-Klairs supple preparation toner (I do water then apply this and add aquaphor on top for my under eyes)

under eyes, nose and mouth

-Cerave Healing Ointment

-Aquaphor

-Lanolin Nipple Cream

After a hour of tret or before bed: I may reapply a moisturizer or just go straight to slathering aquaphor/healing ointment on top. If you’ve got dryness then don’t be afraid to add extra to the dry spots! Sometimes I wake up with aquaphor still around my nose lol

sunscreen

DRMTLGY Broad Spectrum SPF 45 (white cast). I’ve also used their tinted (pulled orange on my light olive skin)

I had gotten Angular cheilitis (dryness/cracked corners of my mouth) and Cerave healing ointment/aquaphor saved me

I have normal skin, and I honestly can't stand to have anything too heavy on my face. Ten layers of a watery toner, and I'm fine. Two layers of something like the the Laneige Cream Skin Refiner, and I immediately start getting congestion and breakouts. Using tretinoin meant that I required more, but it was quite begrudging on my part.

Products I added:

Curel Moisture Cream on my neck, just in case I get sweaty and the tret migrates down my face. I had serious issues with this happening when I was using Differin Gel previously. The Curél helps prevent any major irritation.

Utena Magiabotanica AC+ Medicated Barrier Cream in the morning. This one is supposed to help prevent friction-related acne from wearing masks. It has a protective emollient layer that keeps my masks from irritating my tret-sensitized skin.

CosRx Balancium Ceramide Cream at night. I love this one. It's really rich without being suffocating.

My skin is finally adapting to tretinoin pretty well, so I don't find it necessary to use a heavy moisturizer every night anymore. I usually only bother on nights I use it and the mornings after. The rest of the time, my usual lightweight moisturizers are fine.

I've been trying to find a moisturizer that will hydrate me great but I can't find one that either won't break me out or hydrating enough.

I've used

  • Vanicream (not hydrating enough, no break outs)

  • Cerave (hydrating, break outs)

  • FAB Ultra Repair (not hydrating enough)

  • Curel Intensive (It was great, and pretty hydrating but it's super expensive for what you get)

  • Soon Jung Cream (no break outs, not hydrating)

  • LRP Lipikar and Cicaplast Baume (both not hydrating but also suspected break outs for them)

Before you guys ask, I put vaseline at night and I've reduced my tret use so it isn't as drying.

Thank you :)!

It's perfectly safe to use a moisturizer with tretinoin. In fact, tretinoin without moisturizer is generally not recommended. Many dermatologists advise their patients to moisturize while using it to reduce their chance of developing dry, peeling skin.

What should goes first tretinoin or moisturizer?

When starting out, apply moisturizer directly after applying tretinoin to minimize potential irritation. As your skin adjusts, you can leave tretinoin on for about 20 minutes before following up with a moisturizer.

What should you not layer with tretinoin?

Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, it is especially important to avoid using the following skin products on the same area as tretinoin: Any other topical acne product or skin product containing a peeling agent (eg, benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, salicylic acid, or sulfur).
