Do i need a facebook account for oculus quest 2

Note, I'm not interested in jail breaking it. I am asking when is the official date you can buy one, plug it in, and not ever have to attach it to a facebook account. I am asking because I'll be ordering a VR headset soon. I like the value from a quest 2 and it seems a good place to start, but I live my life with certain values. One of those is 'no facebook' absolutely ever.

Update: As of February 26th 2022, they still require an account and there has been no official date. If you want a quest 2, you have to sign up for Facebook. This is so wrong and I just will not do it. I think it might be worthwhile to pay the premium for an HTC Vive Pro or Valve Index. Maybe later I'll decide to downgrade.

Update 2: Today (July 7 2022), it was reported that in August of 2022 the Quest 2 will be untethered from a facebook account. Source . The article mentions that more details will be released on Tuesday. As July 7th is a Thursday, I must presume that means July 12th. I post this for thread closure in case someone follows a link and lands here.

The PC was completed in March and it's amazing. I will be trying it out in VR shortly. While I'm 90% sure that I am going to go with a Valve Index, I'm 100% sure I'll not be going Oculus. A contributing factor was this thread. There is a lot of bad posts below. I expected better out of this sub. It was a honest question so that I could plan ahead.

One of the key barriers to adopting Meta’s excellent Quest 2 virtual reality headset has been the Facebook account requirement. That changes today.

Meta is rolling out Meta accounts and Horizon profiles from today, meaning there’s no longer a need to link a Facebook account in order to enjoy VR experiences.

Unsurprisingly the requirement had made some Facebook-averse folks feel a little icky – given the privacy ramifications of having a Facebook account – so the change might make a Quest 2 purchase a little more palatable.

Meta had promised the profiles would come in August and today’s the day. In a blog post, the company says it’s all about giving users more flexibility.

The company writes: “Our new Meta account structure gives you more flexibility and control, letting you choose how you do and don’t show up—and whether Facebook and/or Instagram is part of your experience in VR and other surfaces where you use your Meta Horizon profile.”

The video accompanying the blog explains how to get started:

The new policy is a reversal of sorts. For the longest time after buying Oculus, the company enabled users to continue logging in with their Oculus account. That changed in 2020, much to the chagrin of headset owners who’d supported the company since the first Rift headset debuted on Kickstarter. While existing Oculus accounts can still be used, they are being phased out in 2023.

Of course, it’s not a perfect world. While a Meta account might not provide the same level of intrusiveness and personal exposure as a Facebook account, with all of the web tracking and targeted ads, this solution isn’t necessarily perfect.

Users will still be handing over some data to Meta, which presents problems of its own. The company says that not all users will see the option to set up a Meta account today, but it is now rolling out globally.

(Pocket-lint) - Facebook parent company Meta has launched Meta accounts. It's a new login system for Quest and Rift users, offering them a way to access their VR headsets without needing a Facebook or Instagram account. The update is rolling out globally on a gradual basis, according to Meta. Here is a guide on how to create or switch to a Meta account once the option becomes available to you.

Starting in August 2022, you won’t need a Facebook or Instagram account to log into Quest and Rift VR headsets. "This will give everyone more choice about how you show up in the metaverse", Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained in a Facebook post. If you don’t see the option to create a Meta account (and subsequently a Meta Horizon profile) right away, you should get the update "soon", according to Meta's blog post.

New Quest users: Create a Meta account

If you are a proud new owner of a Quest headset and want to use it with your email rather than Facebook or Instagram, the setup process is super simple. Download the Oculus mobile app on your iOS or Android device and turn on your VR headset to get started.

  1. You'll first be served up a code to pair your VR headset to the Oculus app.
  2. You'll then see the option to sign in with Facebook or Instagram. Alternatively, you can create a Meta account via email.
    • By choosing the Meta account option, you no longer need a Facebook or Instagram account to use your Quest.
    • You can still log in with those services so that you can perhaps use the Messenger platform, but it's not required.
  3. After setting up a Meta account, you'll be directed to your Meta Horizon profile setup.
    • Choose a display name, username, and profile picture.
    • Adjust your privacy settings to open to everyone, friends and family, or solo.

Existing Quest and Rift users: Switch to a Meta account

  • Quest users: Go to meta.com/setup to get started
  • Rift users: Go to meta.com/websetup to get started

If you’re an existing Quest or Rift VR headset user who logs in via your Facebook account, then you need to wait to receive an update in the Oculus mobile app. When it arrives, the app will direct you to visit meta.com/setup if you’re on Quest or meta.com/websetup if you’re on Rift. There, you can create a Meta account, and you'll see the option to remove Facebook and use your email instead.

What happens when you create a Meta account?

If you switch to a Meta account (rather than continue to log in with Facebook or Instagram), nothing should be lost. Your purchases, friends, and game progress will be automatically transferred to your new account. However, if you remove your Facebook and Instagram accounts, you will be unable to use Messenger or search for friends on the platform, obviously.

Also, once you make a Meta account, you’ll be directed to create a Meta Horizon profile, complete with a username for you to use in Meta's own metaverse.

Do you need a Meta account?

If your Quest or Rift VR headset is currently tied to an Oculus account, you’ll need to register for a Meta account to continue using the device after 1 January 2023.

Can I use the Quest 2 without Facebook?

Meta (formerly Facebook) today began rolling out support for Meta accounts on Quest 2 headsets, offering a new way to access your VR devices without the need for a Facebook account. The highly-anticipated update provides several options depending on your current setup.

Can I delete Facebook and still use Oculus Quest 2?

Up until August 23, 2022, Meta required a Facebook account just to use an Oculus Quest or Oculus Quest 2 (opens in new tab). Thankfully, the company reversed its policy and now asks users log in with a Meta account (opens in new tab) instead of a Facebook account.
