Great place to work and advance...

Worked at cracker barrel for 10 years or more. Started as a server and cook and was promoted to a manager which was awesome. Going from 20k a year as a server to 45k+ as a manager was great but the hours were long and the responsibility increase is huge. Some of the shifts you get stuck by yourself on and it can be demoralizing. Or getting stuck with a lazy manager on your shift isn't fun. You can have awesome managers on one shift and a terrible manager the next. I have seen so many new managers start and then decide it's not for them. It is a very tough job but I don't think it's impossible. My favorite part was working side by side with the employees. They have a phenomenal spirit. Cracker barrel pays the managers very well but the hourly employees barely make enough to live off of, except the servers who can average $20 an hour between tips and their hourly wage of $5 per hour which is fantastic. And as a server you don't have to carry your own purse or tip anyone out, you drop the check off at the table and tell the guests to have a nice day. However serving is not for everyone. I highly recommend cracker barrel to anyone looking for an hourly position or management. The management team is usually fantastic. Cracker barrel is corporately owned so your not going to get railroaded because the management is kept in check. That being said, the employees have considerable power in the company which is great. Hours can be inconsistent but its the restaursmt business.

ProsGreat pay as a manager or server, fantastic benefits, paid time off is nice, 3 weeks off after 5 years, 20%/35% off of literally everything

ConsBack of house hourly pay, Its hard to staff the restaurant when the hourly wage guidelines are so small, hourly employee increases is GMs decision.

Truth be told

Hired in at one thing then told something different, cool looked forward for development. Never happened spent 60-75 hours a week working short handed and had not quality. Who wants to come back from vacation and work 9 shifts closing back to back. Gm was demoted from a dm he had no clue on how to operate a store. Employees and managers alike cannot stand working for him. Cracker Barrel has a great “idea” of what they want to be but until leadership changes it will be a rat race. No development unless your part of the good ole boys club. Left a lot of great co workers who was treated just as bad. It’s ok for the gm to get away with these things but not anyone else. Tried to reach out to Hr said they would hve my rep for the area to call never did. This was after speaking to the main HR person. When I did finally speak to her it was dry and comments like well he was affected by Covid, really millions of people was. Stop making excuses for him. Sorry Cracker Barrel is not what you thought toit was. It was it was the gm who was not for people. So to work here NO DO NOT DONIT THEY TELL YOU FLUFFED UP STORIES AND GAME PLANS AND YOU WILL BE STUCK ON SHORT STAFF SHIFTS AND STRUGGLE. Cracker Barrel needs revamp

Trouble restaurant with little balance between how to run a restaurant and how to run a retail store

Unfortunately this is a trouble restaurant. Management team is not a team, but a bunch of managers all looking out for themselves. Employees seem to follow the management team as far as being out for themselves. For the most part, is it any worse then most restaurants I have worked?......................yeah it is,I do have to say so. As with all restaurants, it is is a very demanding and stressful job not only for the managers, but for employees as well. To hire staff that is not suitable for this environment is not doing anybody any good. I worked for this company for almost 2 years and its not the company its what is going on with the Watertown Store. I think the biggest culprit unfortunately is who and what is running the retail store side. That is all I can say with regards to that. Oh yeah, I do know what I am talking about because I was one of those managers. I left on my own and it was the best decision I could have made. I guess the environment was just not conducive to my own past experiences working in this industry and being a general manager for many years.

Fun Place to Work

Opening procedures, review our manager's log for any issues from day before, orders to be prepared for delivery, to go for this day, or any special events, open door for employees, set up the registers, conducted a thorough inspection of dinning room, restrooms, and of course the kitchen for cleanliness and organization, conducted inventory of prepared food items for my shift, prepared list of items to be prepared for next shift, and list of items to be pulled out of freezer for the next day. Wrote floor plans for servers, etc. Made sure all personnel needed were in premises, Open restaurant doors for guests, greeted guests at the doors or tables. Go to the bank to take deposits. The hardest part of the job was to keep the restaurant fully staffed, since most of our employees were students from college and some of them were kind of irresponsible. The most enjoyable part at my job was to see happy, satisfied guests, and off course happy co-workers.

No time for family.

Don’t take this job if you’re family oriented. They don’t really take that into consideration. A manager I worked with quit, following family concerns, after the DM told him he needed to put the company first. They are not safe for Covid 19. Outbreaks happen in plenty of stores across the country, and the company does nothing. To make matters worse, in the beginning of the pandemic, people that had given 30-40 years of their lives to this company were let go without much. Managers were made to work to survive the restaurant, but with little regard for their own health. They work everyone like mules, and like to reinforce your pay package as a way to get you to stay. You will work, sleep, and go back to work. If that’s for you, go for it.

ProsManagers can buy from restaurant stock.

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel was the hardest and most rewarding job I've ever had. I had been told by a District Manager from Apple B's that Cracker Barrel is like New York. "If you can make it there...You can make it anywhere." I believe that to be the truth. The culture is all about "pleasing people" internally and externally. I still have good relationships with co managers, gm's, and district managers. The hardest and most enjoyable part of the job was the "pleasing of people". It becomes a skill to be able to win over a guest after something going wrong. No day is perfect, but if you can make each guest feel special you're creating a bond that make people come back.

Good pay, but difficult to balance work/life and stress...

As a server, I made about $10-$20/hr depending on the night and section I received. I was eventually promoted to management after gaining personal mastery of several skill positions. As with most other jobs, your job satisfaction depends a great deal on the quality of your team. I had a great team and overall enjoyed my time with the company. I would not recommend management at this brand to anyone who has a young family, as it's difficult to request time off. I felt guilty to ask for any vacation time, as the store was always so busy and I was one of the few managers without a marriage and children. I'm thankful for the time I spent here. I learned a lot.

Good company great benefits but staffing needs an overhaul

The company overworks their management team and hires individuals that lack worth ethic making it highly improbable to make store goals. As a manager coming from a professional environment of hotels where staff was held accountable for things like performance, attendance and drug policies it was difficult to adapt to a company that does not drug test its applicants prior to offering employment so you had to deal with a lot of front of the house and back of the house employees that had substance abuse issues that would call out or show up for work under the influence

The restaurant industry's greatest training

CBOS is one of the finest places to work that I have ever encountered. The Pleasing People mentality permeates the entire company as they demonstrate what true customer service and care means to their internal and external guests. The training that I received was without a doubt the best training of my career. No stone was left unturned with it's ongoing manager training. If you have a long period of time to climb the ladder to success, I would highly recommend the climb. If not, then I would recommend another avenue.
