Design

The Dyson V10's build quality is alright. Just like the Dyson V8 Animal and Dyson V7 Animal, it's mostly made of plastic, but does have a lightweight metal wand. Unfortunately, it doesn't feel particularly sturdy in places, especially its clear plastic dirt compartment, which feels like it could crack if you were to drop it. Thankfully, parts clip together easily, making routine maintenance a quick and simple process.

The Dyson V10 has quite a few parts that need to be cleaned regularly. Consider the JASHEN V16 if you want a stick/handheld vacuum with fewer maintenance requirements.

• Dirt compartment: To remove the dirt compartment, you first need to detach the wand. It can then be separated from the cyclone by pressing the red arrow on the 'spine' of the cyclone. It should be emptied whenever you notice that it's full, but be aware that dust and debris can be released into the air when doing so.
• Lint screen: The lint screen is found inside the dirt compartment. You should clean this screen when necessary by using a damp cloth to remove debris.
• HEPA filter: The HEPA filter is located on the top of the vacuum and can be unlocked from its housing by twisting it counter-clockwise, which allows you to pull it free. It should be washed once a month with cold water or when the filter maintenance indicator lights up.
• Motorized head and roller: You can use a coin to unlock the motorized head's side cover, allowing you to slide out the brushroll. You can clean this part whenever there are hair wraps by using scissors or your hands.
• Soft roller cleaner head: There are two brushrolls that can be accessed by removing the side cover on the soft roller cleaning head, which can be unlocked with a coin. If there are any hair wraps, you can remove them by hand or with scissors. You can also wash this part with cold water.
• Turbo brush: Just like the primary vacuum heads, you can remove the miniature brushroll by unlocking the turbo brush's side cover using a coin. You can clean this part by removing hair wraps with scissors or your hands.

Any part washed with water needs to air dry for at least 24 hours before using it again.

The Dyson V10 incurs virtually no recurring costs, which is outstanding. The filter is expected to last the lifetime of the vacuum as long as it's maintained. However, if any parts break or need replacing, you can purchase them directly from Dyson's website.

The Dyson V10's dirt compartment is okay. It's larger than that of the Dyson V8 Animal, but it's still fairly small and needs frequent emptying. Luckily, there's an indicator that lets you know when the compartment's full. Consider the Dyson Outsize Absolute+ if you're looking for a cordless stick vacuum with a larger dirt compartment.

The Dyson V10's battery performance is decent. In its most energy-efficient 'Suction 1' mode and without any attachments fitted in place, it can last just over an hour on a single charge. However, in its high-power 'BOOST' mode with the motorized head fitted in place, it supplies roughly 10 minutes of runtime, so you need to work quickly when dealing with stubborn messes. That said, it's worth noting that battery life can vary somewhat noticeably in the real world. Luckily, there are three LED lights on the vacuum's body that let you know when your battery is running low.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute has a few extra features. It has three power modes that change its suction: 'Suction 1', which has the longest battery life, 'Suction 2', which is a balanced mode to clean bare floors and carpets, and 'BOOST' mode, which is for intensive ground-in dirt cleaning. There's also a filter light as well as a blockage light indicator. Unlike the Dyson V12 Detect Slim however, it isn't capable of automatically changing its power mode when it's on carpet or when it detects high levels of debris on the ground.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute comes with a lot of tools that easily clip onto the wand, hose, or vacuum. The hard bristle brush can retract to become the upholstery brush while the flexible crevice tool can extend and connect to the small dusting brush. There's also a harder bristle brush for stubborn dirt as well as a 180-degree extension cleaner, which can help you clean high-up places. The vacuum also features a turbo brush for tackling debris on fabric surfaces and an extension hose for cleaning hard-to-reach spots.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute delivers outstanding performance on bare floors. It can pick up pet hair as well as small debris like rice without too much difficulty. However, while it can clear most bulky debris like cereal, some of this material can get stuck at the entry point near the head, especially when using the soft brush roll head. It should also be noted that this issue also happens with the motorized brush roll, but less frequently. It easily clears pet hair and does a decent job of sucking up both fine debris like baking soda and larger material like sand, though you still might need to make an extra pass to collect everything. The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute has good suction power at its floorhead. Its soft roller head sits against the contact surface pretty tightly, resulting in a fairly tight seal and strong crevice cleaning performance. Using it with its multi-surface floorhead, which doesn't create quite as tight a seal, results in the following suction measurements, which are notably lower.

The Dyson V10 has good maneuverability. Thanks to its lightweight design and plastic wheels, it can be easily moved around a room. However, since there's no on-board tool storage, you need to make sure you have the brush you want to use nearby. When cleaning under a couch or table, the filter can get in the way if you're not crouched and can hit your wrist. The vacuum can also get stuck on rug tassels, even on its lowest suction power setting. Thankfully, it can easily climb over or onto electrical cables and thick rugs.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Dyson Cyclone V10 also comes in several other variants with a different amount of brushes and tools included. They also have different wand colors, but we expect our results to be valid for the other color variants as well. We tested the 'Absolute' variant, and you can see its label here.

Compared To Other Vacuums

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is a cordless stick/handheld vacuum that comes with a wide variety of tools and brushes to help you get the job done. When compared to similar Dyson vacuums like the Dyson V7 Animal or the Dyson V11 Animal, it has generally similar performance on all surface types, although it tends to do just a bit better on bare floors. However, it lacks any on-board storage for its tools and it has more parts that require regular cleaning compared to some other Dysons.

The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is better than the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute. The V12 has a far more advanced power adjustment function, as it can automatically increase its suction setting when used on carpet or when it detects an area with a high concentration of debris. It also performs slightly better on bare floors, clears away more pet hair on upholstered surfaces, and weighs less, making it easier to maneuver. That said, the V10 does a better job on low-pile carpet and has a bigger dirt compartment that won't need emptying as often.

The Dyson V8 Animal and the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute are very similar stick/handheld vacuums with a few minor differences. While these two vacuums are very similarly matched in terms of their performance on bare floors as well as carpet, the V8 Animal is a bit lighter and easier to maintain. However, the Cyclone V10 Absolute comes with more tools and brushes. Its battery takes a lot less time to charge, and its dirt compartment, while small, can hold slightly more than the V8 Animal.

The Dyson V7 Animal and the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute are two similar stick/handheld vacuums with a few differences. Thanks to its more powerful suction motor, the Cyclone V10 Absolute does a significantly better job on bare floors, and it's a bit better on low-pile carpet as well. The V11 Animal has fewer maintenance requirements, is easy to store, and its dirt compartment holds more debris. The V11 Animal also features a more powerful suction motor, but this doesn't necessarily correlate to real world performance. While it does do slightly better on high-pile carpet, the V10 offers slightly better performance on bare floors as well as low-pile carpet and comes with more tools and brushes, including a dedicated bare floor soft roller floorhead. The V10's battery charges much faster too.

The Dyson V15 Detect is a better overall vacuum than the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute. The V15 clears more debris on bare floors, low-pile carpet, and high-pile carpet. It's also easier to store thanks to its included wand clip, which allows you to hang two different tools on the vacuum. Meanwhile, the V10 is lighter and takes much less time to charge despite offering similar overall runtime.

The LG CordZero A9 A916BM is a little better than the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute. The LG comes with a second battery that gives it a longer maximum runtime if you keep it charged and performs better on bare floors and high-pile carpet, especially in regards to fine debris. However, the Dyson incurs virtually no recurring costs, comes with more attachments, and is more effective on low-pile carpet.

The Samsung Jet 90 Complete is a better vacuum for most uses than the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute. The Samsung has a slightly better performance on bare floors and is much better on high-pile carpets, where it clears more debris like sand and baking soda. It recharges faster and has a manual surface type adjustment feature. On the other hand, the Dyson picks up more debris from low-pile carpets and also incurs fewer recurring costs.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is better than the LG CordZero A9 Ultimate. The Dyson incurs virtually no recurring costs, has a bigger dirt compartment, comes with more tools and brushes, and delivers better performance on low and high-pile carpet. It also charges substantially faster, and while it's maximum runtime is shorter than that of the LG, that can vary in the real world. Meanwhile, the LG is marginally more effective on bare floors.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute and Dyson Ball Animal 2 are differently-designed vacuums intended for distinct use cases, so one might be a better fit for you, depending on your exact needs. The cordless stick/handheld V10 is much lighter and is a lot more maneuverable. It's also easier to assemble or attach different tools thanks to the use of easy-clip mechanisms. Conversely, the Ball Animal 2 has a virtually indefinite runtime, fewer parts that need to be regularly cleaned, and a vacuum head that automatically changes height to suit different surface types.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute does better in more situations than the JASHEN V16. The Dyson is more effective at picking up all kinds of debris on everything from hardwood floors to shag carpeting, comes with more tools and accessories, and recharges much faster. The JASHEN, meanwhile, is a little bit lighter and has fewer parts that require regular maintenance.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is a better vacuum for cleaning carpeted surfaces than the Shark ION F80. The Dyson easily picks up more pet hair as well as small and large debris from low to high-pile carpet. It's lighter, its dirt compartment is slightly larger, and it has virtually no recurring costs. It also comes with a lot more tools and brushes than the Shark. However, the Shark is better at cleaning bare floors, it feels better built, and it's easier to maintain. It's also able to maneuver around a room more easily than the Dyson.
