Emergency ballasts for T12, T8 and T5 linear fluorescent fixtures continue supplying power to the fluorescent lamps when there is a loss of power to the circuit. Like any linear fluorescent electronic lighting ballast, during normal operation, emergency ballasts limit the voltage or current across the lamps, preventing the lamps or circuits from failing.

Throughout regular operation, a battery built into the ballast maintains a charge. During an outage, the battery in the emergency ballast keeps the fluorescent tubes illuminated for 90 minutes or more. Emergency ballasts are rated to supply a consistent lumen output off the battery power, ranging from 300-500 lumens on the low end all the way up to 3000 lumens on the high end.

Linear fluorescent emergency ballasts are essential for security and life safety in a commercial lighting application. You can select standalone emergency ballasts from our inventory, or choose a complete linear fluorescent emergency ballast retrofit kit for your installation.

Will a fluorescent emergency ballast work with LED lights?

Type A LED tubes run on fluorescent ballasts and some will run in conjunction with an emergency ballast. Pros – Easy install if compatible. Allows you to re-use existing fluorescent emergency ballast. Cons – Small likelihood of compatibility with existing emergency ballast for any Type A LED T8.

Can you use a T8 LED bulb without a ballast?

Do T8 LED bulbs need a ballast? Most T8 LED bulbs do not need a ballast. The only type of LED tube that requires a ballast is plug-and-play. Used as direct replacements for fluorescent tubes, plug-and-play LED tube lights install without fixture rewiring, and operate off the existing fluorescent ballast.

Can I bypass the ballast for LED lights?

Since LED lights work on low DC voltage, they need a driver. Most T8 LED tubes do not need a ballast. So, if you are going to install a T8 LED tube light, it will require a ballast bypass unless you choose a ballast compatible T8 LED tube.

Do you need a special ballast for LED lights?

No LED bulbs require a ballast, although some are engineered to work with an existing ballast. You will find ballast-compatible or "plug-and-play" LEDs that are designed to replace linear fluorescents, compact fluorescents, or HIDs. Incandescent and halogen lamps do not require a ballast.
