As the only ophthalmic clinic in the Netherlands, all of our consulting rooms are equipped with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

As a result, this important retinal examination can be done directly during the consultation, for example, in macular degeneration, or in case of diabetes disease.

As one of the first clinics in the Netherlands we use the OptoVue Avanti RTVue XR Angiovue.

OCTA is a new technology that has great potential for use in the clinical setting. Compared with FA and ICGA, the current retinal angiographic gold standards, OCTA advantages are that it is non-invasive, acquires volumetric scans that can be segmented to specific depths, uses motion contrast instead of intravenous dye, can be obtained within seconds, provides accurate size and localization information, visualizes both the retinal and choroidal vasculature, and shows structural and blood flow information in tandem.

Advanced retinal examination

We work with all insurance companies on reimbursement basis, ie without a contract.

This means that you will receive an invoice from us which is then paid to you in whole or in part by your insurer. The amount of the fee depends on the contract with your insurance company.

A Natura Polis usually indicates a low fee. Furthermore, for reimbursement you need a referral from your GP or specialist.

In case of incomplete compensation, we work with a "Coulanceregeling". Make sure you have a full specification of the reimbursement of your health insurance.

Since 2012 healthcare institutions have to control the identity of patients. We therefore urge you, even if you are already known to us, to carry identification and show it at the entrance to de assistence.

The OMC Amsterdam will also be normally open for regular ophthalmic care in 2022. It is not necessary to postpone an appointment or treatment. All necessary measures have been taken. The equipment has many other applications such as; treating rosacea, telangiectasia and permanent hair removal.

What is maculadegeneration (AMD)?

Many people perceive moving turbidity in the field of vision. These opacities are not always noticeable. The spots are often more pronounced against a light background.

If you suddenly see more floating spots, a larger spot, or a blur, notice flashes of light or experience reduced vision, you should contact an ophthalmologist.

Early detection of a retinal tear is very important to preserve vision. Not all retinal tears need to be treated. Some small tears are quite harmless. This partly depends on the location and the shape (for example: round or horseshoe-shaped) of the crack.

Information regarding COVID-19

The operation is performed by cataract surgeon Ljubica Jovanovik-Pandova.

The most advanced technique is used for this: phacoemulsification.

A very small cut in the cornea removes the contents of the lens from the eye.

The cloudy lens core is crushed with ultrasonic sound waves and discharged through a rinse-suction system.

The lens capsule and the suspension device of the lens remain in the eye.

Then an artificial lens is inserted into the lens pouch. This artificial lens is foldable so that it can be inserted through the same 3 mm wide cut that removed the material from the lens core.

This incision is so small that a stitch is usually not necessary.

The Meibomian gland dysfunction is permanently treated with an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) device.

During three sessions, the glands in the eyelid are stimulated with Xenon light therapy. The IPL flashlight is applied in a series of places. This increases lipid production.

The tears will therefore evaporate less quickly, reducing the problems of dry eyes.

This IPL treatment is performed with the E-Eye device.

The treatment is painless and only takes a few minutes.

Macular degeneration (AMD / AMD) is a disease of the central part of the retina, the macula lutea, or yellow spot. The central part of the retina (the macula) is responsible for the perception of small details.

Just as in a camera the film or sensor is the light-sensitive layer, the retina is the light-sensitive layer of the eye. Macular degeneration is often referred to as 'wear and tear' of the retina.

Smokers are five times more likely to develop macular degeneration than non-smokers. Smokers predisposed to AMD get this condition 40-100 times more often.

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the nerve fibers of the optic nerve are gradually lost. These nerve fibers connect the retina to the brain. The loss of nerve fibers causes blind spots.

These are caused by defects in the visual field.

The end condition of glaucoma is blindness. If detected in time - but that is more difficult than it seems - and treated, the onset of blindness can be delayed or even prevented.

Glaucoma does not cause complaints until very late. Anyone can have it no matter how good they see.

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) can cause damage to the inside of the eye. Without immediately affecting vision, abnormalities may still be present in the retina.

This is called diabetic retinopathy.

If these harmful deviations are not recognized and treated in time, blindness can result.

Orthoptists

If there is something wrong with the cooperation between the eyes or the eye position, an orthoptist is called in.

Orthoptics means "looking straight". Good cooperation between the eyes is the basis for a straight eye position. A straight eye position allows both eyes to develop as well as possible.

You have never heard of an orthoptist? That is possible, because the profession of orthoptist is still relatively unknown, although it is not a new profession.

The examination includes refraction determination (eye strength) with the help of eye drops (Cyclogyl or Atropine). Before or after the orthoptic examination, an ophthalmic examination is carried out by the ophthalmologist.

Laser treatment offers some important advantages compared to surgery.

The eye does not need to be opened, so there is no risk of infection. Laser treatment is less painful and can therefore usually be done on an outpatient basis, without admission to hospital.
