Defective Defrost ThermostatAs we mentioned, the defrost heater kicks on for 20 minutes, several times per day to melt away any frost that accumulates. For this system to operate properly, the defrost thermostat must sense that the coils are cold enough. When it senses that the coils are cold enough, it tells the defrost heater to turn on. When the thermostat becomes defective, it’s unable to sense the true temperature of the coils, and the heater won’t turn on. When the heater stops working, frost begins to build up. Once this occurs, air is no longer able to travel through the coils and provide cold air to the fridge or freezer. Before changing this part it’s best to use a multimeter to check for continuity.
