Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

My husband and I needed a deep cleaning in our house before we rent it out and the house looked great! Each room was thoroughly cleaned. I would absolutely hire them again!

Kelly and her team gave my new home a deep clean prior to my moving in. The house was full of dust following a major remodel and the appliances in the kitchen needed extra attention. Kelly really paid attention to the problem areas and my house felt spotless by the time she was finished. She uses good quality cleaning products which is important to me and was a pleasure to deal with. I will definitely be using her services in the future for regular cleaning.

Absolutely loved Monica’s work! Coming home to a very clean home after a long day at work was all I wanted. She cleaned every corner, changed sheets, and left the house spotless and smelling great. Definitely recommend and look forward to my now biweekly cleanings! The price is reasonable and worth it!

First visit was great, so I rehired. Each successive visit was less and less acceptable. The last (4th) visit was awful, and I will not use them again. The house was not clean, about 30% of the job done. This is when I really need a good cleaning for the holiday. I am sorry I reviewed them after a first visit. Be careful when you rehire.

Armando & his team did a terrific job cleaning our house yesterday👍!!! They were prompt, communicative, responsive and very thorough in their cleaning. It was a big project, because we had some of our floors refinished the day before & the floor refinishers did not adequately tarp off the rest of the house to protect it from the voluminous plumes of dust they created. As a result, all of the furniture, rugs & everything else in the living room and dining room were covered in a thick layer of wood dust. Armando & his team took everything in stride and did a wonderful job!! We were so pleased with all of their hard work that we ended up paying them extra for a job well done!! We will definitely use them again. Thank you Armando & your great cleaning team for all of your help!! 🙂

Laura did an ok job of cleaning and I was ok with the overall experience. My wife came in as Laura was leaving and pointed out several concerns as she inspected the job. We weren't able to do a final walk through with Laura because by the time my wife asked and I realized we hadn't, she was gone. My wife asked why she wouldn't have done a walk through to make sure we were ok, but unfortunately, I didn't have an answer to that. I also noticed that the areas I mentioned needed some extra vacuuming and a small space between my bathroom sink and wall that hadn't been vacuumed at all weren't addressed either. The thing that was the biggest issue was the Windows. I expected a more thorough cleaning of not just the actual glass, but the frame and housing as well. The most major issue was that she couldn't really handle the weight of the Windows and from time to time I'd hear a loud bang, and when I would check on her, it would be a window that fell partially out of its groove in the frame. There was no breakage and she wasn't hurt, which were my main concerns, but when one of the Windows actually came completely off the frame, it made me feel like I should be helping her, which is something I didn't intend to do as I don't typically assist anyone I hire to do work for me; if I had the time, or was able to do the job, then I'd give it a go myself. given the circumstance I had to also consider how to get my window back up, since she admitted she wouldn't be able to do it herself. I figured I'd call my building super so I can get my window back up, but until then I pray there is no more bad weather!
