Aug 2, 2016 I need advice on a way to create a funnel inside the barrel to direct corn towards the spout so it doesn't collect around it and not go down the tube when it gets low on feed. I did think about mounting it on an angle to direct the flow toward the front where the spout is. I also thought about getting a can of that foam sealer that expands and
layering it up (low in the middle and high on the outside) into a funnel. Not sure if that stuff would affect the corn though.. Joined Feb 1, 2011 · 459 Posts
Seal that hole that is off center, drill a new centered hole, and install a regular feeder funnel inside. Joined Oct 12, 2015 · 177 Posts

you can buy them, i would put one in there for sure. i have a big hanging one and i didn't have one in there the first year. the corn will mildew and rot, nothing on the sides can get out. i just bought a funnel for mine and used 3 self taping screws on the bottom to hold it in place. i am sure you could make something, but i think they are only like

However you figure out how you want to do it, you need some sort of funnel or you will have mold/mildew and flow problems once the corn get chunky. Joined Feb 4, 2016 · 5,128 Posts
Cut a piece of scrap plywood that will sit an an angle on the lowest edge and curved to match the drum diameter. Nail a wooden support under it to hold it at the proper angle. I fear you are going to see jams of blockage in the elbow. Thats why some drum feeders have a wooden agitator stick that deer bump that releases corn. I dont think corn will
flow like you hope it will. Joined Mar 27, 2015 · 660 Posts

also no matter what you decide i would make a new hole in the center rather than the edge you will have less problems that way... Joined Jul 9, 2009 · 2,346 Posts

View attachment 4609762 View attachment 4609778 those feeder trough idea works well enough im thinking about coverting all of my feeders to that. I made a funnel out of HMW sheet we had at work. With your design id take a piece of plywood on an angle inside the barrel and a hole in the board with a pvc pipe connecting the board to your opening

Discussion Starter · #10 · Aug 2, 2016 Well i ended up going with plywood since i had some extra in the garage. I think this should work well enough. I am going to replace the 90^ elbow with a 45^ and let the corn spill out just above the ground surface, that should allow ample flow

I don't have funnels in any of my feeders--the 300# of corn in a 55-gal drum lasts a long time, and since my hunting spots are close, it is easy for me to top them off. I have a buddy who is anal about it though and he insists you "need" the funnels. If I put out a feeder designed like that around here, it would be emptied nearly overnight

Discussion Starter · #13 · Aug 2, 2016 Boy the animals are going to do a number on that plastic . I wondered if the animals would tear it up. I used to get the barrels for free and had one left in the garage so i figured i would make a feeder. I only got about $15 in it all, a little more when i get some straps to strap it to a tree. I
will just have to see if it holds up or not once i get it out there and fill it up.
