My garage has an obstruction preventing the proper installation of the typical track or chain driven opener. I found a small Genie many years ago that would fit, but due to the length of the track and the beam across my garage ceiling, it would never fully open the door. I won't go into the details, but because of this, I couldn't get my new Jeep into the garage without removing the rooftop antenna. This opener operates by turning the torsion bar that runs across the top of the door. (This is where the big springs are mounted). Almost all garage doors have the 1" dia. torsion bar this was designed for (but you should check that before you buy this). It mounts on either the left or the right end of the bar. Installation is probably easier than a standard screw or chain drive opener. I say "probably" because there are a couple of things needed that a chain drive does not: a solonoid locking mechanism (included) and a cable tension sensor (also included). But these are very easy to mount. You just need to run a couple of more wires than you would in a normal installation. But balance that against not having to work on your ceiling from a stepladder to mount a chain or screw drive opener. I've installed a few of those at friends homes over the years and it's always a 2-man job (unless you're a pro). One person can easily install this in a few hours. The overhead light is controlled wirelessly from the main unit so it can mount almost everywhere where there's an AC outlet.. It also has dual lamp sockets so if one suddenly burns out, you're not in the dark. Max rating is 200 watts too, so there's plenty of light. The built-in motion sensor that keeps the light on is a nice feature too when working in the garage. The door will close automatically after a time period you select (1 to 10 minutes). It's nice if you have someone in the home who always forgets to close the door. The control unit beeps a loud warning before this happens and of course would stop/reverse if something is blocking the door light sensor. This auto-close feature can be disabled if you don't like it or don't want to use it. There's a bedroom above our garage and the quiet operation of this opener is much appreciated by the occupant. When activated, you hear the locking solonoid click and a soft hum of the motor. No rattling chain noise. Very quiet indeed. Some have noted that it is slow, but it is just as fast as the old Genie screw drive opener. It can be optionally accessed via the internet, but for the life of me I don't know why I would want to do that. With the upcoming revolution in the "Internet of Things", they say I might someday connect to my toaster too. But I think I can wait for that. If you want it though, it's an inexpensive option that I did not buy (yet). All in all, I have to say it is indeed a better mouse trap. It was originally intended to solve difficult installation problems with tall ceilings and obstructed mounting areas like mine, but given the ease of installation, unique features, and the quiet operation, it would make any homeowner happy. The remote control uses the newer RF links to operate from your car so some built-in vehicle HOMELINK systems pre-2007 may not work. They say 2007 and later cars will be OK, but my 2007 Hyundai HOMELINK system did not operate it. The 2012 Jeep worked fine. If you run into this problem, they have a low cost "repeater" that corrects the problem by linking the old to the new. UPDATE: Security on this opener is by no means foolproof. Be aware of this.
