Question from Callie:  I had a casual friend on Facebook who started leaving hateful comments on my posts after he found out that my politics are different than his.

It got so bad that I eventually got mad enough to block him.

But now I’m having second thoughts about blocking him because I recently found out that his daughter and my daughter are great friends in real life.

The reason I blocked him instead of just unfriending him was to make sure he wouldn’t be able to see my posts.

My question is will he be able to see my posts if I unblock him? If the answer is yes I’ll just leave him blocked because I don’t want him seeing my posts.

Rick’s answer: Callie, the answer is to your question is “maybe”. It all depends on the privacy level you have selected for your posts.

When you block someone that completely severs your friendship with that person on Facebook, but if you end up unblocking him he’ll still be able to see any of your “Public” posts even though he is no longer on your Friends List.

For example, he can always “Follow” you to have your Public posts start showing up in his Newsfeed again.

And even if he doesn’t follow you he’ll still be able to see your Public posts if he visits your Timeline directly.

If you want to be absolutely certain that this person never sees your posts after you unblock him you’ll need to start posting everything with a privacy level of “Friends” and retroactively change the privacy of your existing posts to “Friends” as well.

Luckily, it’s very easy to make those changes. Just follow the steps below for the device you’re using.

If you use Facebook in a web browser on a laptop or desktop computer…

1 – Log into your Facebook account.

2 – Click the down arrow located on the right side of the Menu bar near the top of the Facebook window.

3 – Click Settings & Privacy.

4 – Click Settings.

5 – Click the Privacy link that’s located in the left-hand column.

6 – Click Who can see your future posts? and change that setting to Friends.

7 – Click Limit the audience for posts you’ve shared with friends of friends or Public?

8 – Click the Limit Past Posts button.

If you use the Facebook app on a mobile device…

Note: There is no setting in the Facebook app Settings screens that allow you to determine the default privacy level for all future posts.

Therefore you’ll need to set the privacy of every new post to “Friends” manually while you’re creating the posts.

However, there is a setting you can use to change the privacy of all of your existing posts to “Friends”. Follow these steps to change that setting:

1 – Log into your Facebook account.

2 – Tap the Menu icon (it looks like three horizontal lines stacked atop one another).

3 – Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy.

4 – Tap Settings.

5 – Scroll down to the “Privacy” section and tap Privacy Settings.

6 – Tap Limit who can see past posts.

7 – Tap LIMIT PAST POSTS.

That’s all there is to it. After you make those changes your newly-unblocked former friend will no longer be able to see any of your existing or future posts.

I hope this helps, Callie. Good luck!

Update from Callie:  Thanks, Rick. I made the changes you suggested.

Bonus tip: This post explains why there’s really no such thing as privacy on Facebook.

Cick here to ask me a tech question.

Facebook privacy settings allow you to control the visibility of the content you share on the social network. You can adjust your settings to share with some friends and hide from others. When privacy settings are not enough, you can use the reversible Block feature to fully restrict users from accessing your information. Assuming a few conditions are met, it is possible to get blocked Facebook friends back.

Facebook Block Feature

  1. The Facebook Block feature allows you to create a list of users who are unauthorized to access your content. When you block someone, all connections that once existed between you, including friendship pages, notes, comments and likes, will be lost. You no longer have access to their profile and they can no longer access yours. Photo tags and comments are removed. Blocking does not extend beyond Facebook to anywhere else on the Internet or third-party applications.

How to Block Users

  1. Sign in to your Facebook account using your email address and password. Click the "Account" tab located in the upper right corner of any page and select the "Privacy Preferences" option that appears in the drop-down list. Scroll to the bottom of the resulting page and click the "Edit Your Lists" link under the "Block Lists" section. Type the name or email address of the person you wish to block in the spaces provided and select the "Block" button. Locate the user in the resulting pop-up box and click the "Block" button.

How to Unblock Users

  1. If you have a change of heart, you can take steps to re-establish your Facebook friendship. Locate the name of the person you wish to friend and click the "Unblock" button that appears next to his name. Click the "Confirm" button to submit. Begin typing the unblocked user's name in the search box located at the top of any page and select his name from the list that appears. Click the "Add As Friend" button that appears on the resulting profile page. Note that, if the "Add As Friend" button does not appear, or you are unable to locate the user's profile, the user has blocked you and you cannot send a friend request. Find an alternative way to communicate and ask that the user remove the block so you can send a new friend request.

Facebook Privacy Settings

  1. As an alternative to blocking Facebook friends, you can adjust your privacy settings to limit their access to your profile. Create a Limited Profile friend list, which contains any Facebook friends you wish to restrict. From your homepage, click the "Friends" link in the left sidebar and click the "Manage Friend Lists" button in the upper right corner of the resulting page. Click the "Create A List" button and select at least one user from the resulting pop-up box. Type "Limited Profile" in the space provided for the list name and click the "Create List" button. Adjust your privacy settings from the "Privacy Preferences" link in the "Account" drop-down menu at the top of any page. Customize your privacy preferences on the resulting pages to hide specific types of content, as desired, from your Limited Profile friend list.

Are you still friends after you unblock someone on Facebook?

When you unblock someone's profile, you won't automatically be friends again. If you block a profile you're friends with and then unblock it, you'll need to send that profile a new friend request.

What happens when you block someone on Facebook and then unblock them?

It's important to note that when you block someone on Facebook, you will also automatically unfriend them. Unblocking them will not automatically add them as a friend again -- you will need to send them a separate friend request after you unblock them if you wish to be their friend again.

Does blocking a friend unfriend them?

If you do not want someone to be able to see your profile, items you post on your timeline, tag you, or send you messages, then you should block this person. When you block someone, you automatically unfriend that person. To block someone, click the down arrow in the top right-hand corner of the Facebook application.
