Is 10mg of melatonin too much reddit

you cant overdose on melatonin. only problem is if you take too much you’ll probably feel extra tired the next day and/or have a headache.

not sure about long term effects but seeing as its just a dietary supplement theres probably not much other than the risk of gaining dependance if you use it for too long. Ive used it for about 5 months (on most days) and have no dependance.

I’m a teen too and i usually take 5mg/night. i’ve taken up to 25mg before and haven’t felt anything other than extra tiredness the next day so youll be fine.

obviously you want to start with the lowest possible dose for you so you get the best effects without the worst aide wffects. you should probably start with just eating a quarter of a gummy until you test it and maybe go up to half

Since I see folks here recommend melatonin left and right, often at crazy doses, and with a lot of misinformation, I think this is a must read for anyone considering supplementing Melatonin.

Biggest takeaways:

  • Best dose for most people is 0.3mg, and no more than 0.5mg (yes, that is less than half a milligram). Definitely NOT 3mg, or 5, or 10(!) which is what many companies sell.

  • Taking it right before sleep can work for sleep onset (time to fall asleep) but can mess with your circadian rhythm. Best time is several hours before going to sleep (depending on your desired sleep schedule or sleep issues), and taking it at the same time each day if taken regularly.

I highly recommend reading the whole thing, it's both fascinating and informative.

Melatonin doesn't take 45+ minutes to break down like a typical pill. Many people take it & go about their evenings, then wonder why it's not working.

Because it's a hormone, Melatonin only has about a 30 minute window to work, if you miss the window it won't take effect.

What you want to do is take it as you're getting into bed. Turn out the lights & close your eyes, in 30 minutes you should be knocked out.

Edit: As several people have stated, less is more. Stick with doses under 5mg, that 10mg stuff will have you waking up in about 4 hours, low doses will help you sleep the whole night.

Is 10mg of melatonin too much reddit

Hi, I'm kinda new to Reddit and just kinda stumbled across this sub. I would really like this to be taken seriously, as I'm genuinely worried of the long term effects of this. A little background, I'm 17m, about 120lbs(if that matters) and I first started taking melatonin about 10 mouthes ago. Since then I've taken it almost everyday. I want to clarify that I am not diagnosed with any sleeping disorder but I've had trouble sleeping all my life, I just assumed it was my adhd(Maybe I am right idk). I've taken 2 gummies that are 10mg each ever since I've started. I've heard from friends that this alone(20mg per night) is too much. I do recognise that there may be a reliance issue and that's what I'm most worried about. As of late(about 2 mouthes) I've been taking more and more each night. The most I've had was 40mg. I take this much because I have eczema and asthma. My eczema itches alot more when I'm trying to sleep(very often) and my asthma makes it hard to breathe(not so often). I take a bunch of melatonin before bed in hopes of knocking my self out before my asthma kicks in or i numb myself so much that I don't itch. This is a real struggle I've had and is so hard to speak out about. I have no idea if this will even get noticed but just please, I want any advice you can give me. Such as if it's dangerous to take this much? or will the effect not be as strong if I keep taking more? Will this cause reliance on melatonin to sleep in the future? Thank you so much for reading, I really appreciate it.
