EXCLUSIVE: Actress, model and singer Bella Thorne (Midnight Sun) has been set to star in thriller Saint Clare, co-scripted by Guinevere Turner (American Psycho).

The project will follow Clare Bleecker (Thorne), a quiet catholic college student with a divine vocation for killing. The story is based on novel Clare At 16 by Don Roff, with its novel sequel out in 2023. 

Producers are in negotiations with Rebecca DeMornay (Jessica Jones) to join the cast, with additional casting of other key roles underway. Production is scheduled to begin soon in Kentucky.

The film will be directed by Mitzi Peirone (Braid) who has also scripted with Turner (who co-wrote the screenplay for cult Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho). Producers are David Chackler, Arielle Elwes, Thor Bradwell, and Joel Michaely.

Screen Media has picked up worldwide rights to the project and will have its Foresight Unlimited division launch international sales at this month’s Cannes market. Screen Media will distribute the film in the U.S.

Executive producers are Cassian Elwes, Seth Needle, Mark Damon, Tamara Birkemoe, Veronica Radaelli, Tom Culliver, Nadia Redler, Dave Sereny, and Jere Hausfater.

The Screen Media deal was negotiated by Seth Needle on behalf of Screen Media and Jere Hausfater for Elevated.

Thorne is best known for movies including Midnight Sun, The DUFF, The Babysitter series and Amityville: The Awakening, as well as TV series such as Famous In Love and Paradise City.

American Psycho, director Mary Harron's 2000 movie adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' controversial 1991 novel — which the author once deemed essentially unfilmable — stars Christian Bale as '80s investment banker, facial mask and business card enthusiast, and (possible) psychopath Patrick Bateman alongside a deep bench of a cast that has also gone on to plenty of big things. 

When he's not ruminating over the recorded output of Phil Collins or Huey Lewis, Bateman is jockeying for influence with his fellow investment bankers, a group that includes Jared Leto as Paul Allen, Justin Theroux as Timothy Bryce, Josh Lucas as Craig McDermott, Matt Ross as Luis Carruthers, and Bill Sage as David Van Patten. And when Allen appears with a business card superior to his own, well, Bateman soon exacts his revenge (or so we're led to believe) in one of the film's most memorable, hilarious, and harrowing scenes. 

Things devolve from there, with Bateman keeping up appearances while he (maybe) tortures and kills numerous people. Willem Dafoe appears as a private investigator looking into Allen's disappearance, Samantha Mathis plays Courtney, Carruthers' fiancee who's also sleeping with Bateman, Reese Witherspoon as Evelyn, Bateman's own fiancee whom he's completely indifferent to, and Chloe Sevigny as Jean, Bateman's loyal secretary, who discovers his notebook with graphic descriptions of murdering and mutilating. As the violence escalates, Bateman's sanity slips — but maybe he wasn't really sane to begin with. As the film unfolds, it becomes a question of what's true and what's relative when the world around Bateman is a sanitized 1980s blur of greed and perversion.

Seeing as it's been well over two decades since the release of the film, which has lived on through a cult following and internet memes (and is currently available to stream on HBO Max), it's high time to see what's been up with the cast that brought American Psycho to life.
