Is spider man far from home on disney

MJ (Zendaya) and Spider-Man jump off the bridge iin Columbia Pictures' SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME.

Spider-Man is one of the most popular Marvel characters of all time, but why aren’t his movies on Disney Plus?

If you asked someone to pick their favorite superhero, there is a pretty strong chance that they might say Spider-Man. The web-slinging wonder is arguably the most popular Marvel Comics character of all time and unquestionably one of the most famous superheroes ever.

That popularity has translated into film too, as Peter Parker has headlined eight live-action theatrical movies. It all started with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2002, a film led by Tobey Maguire which spawned a trilogy. We then got the two films from the Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man film series directed by Marc Webb.

Tom Holland then took over the role as the character joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016, appearing in Captain America: Civil War before headlining his own trilogy set within the MCU.

However, why aren’t Spidey’s movies, specifically the MCU ones, on Disney Plus?

Why the Spider-Man movies aren’t on Disney Plus

The reason that the Spider-Man movies aren’t on Disney Plus is down to the fact that Sony owns the film rights to the character, not Marvel Studios. The two do collaborate on the MCU projects, which allows Marvel to incorporate the character in their overarching story and explains why the other MCU movies to feature Spider-Man () are on Disney Plus.

However, you won’t find Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home or No Way Home on the service as Sony has streaming deals with other platforms. Speaking of which, the studio did sign a new deal that would see their new theatrical releases and existing films go to Disney Plus, Hulu and the linear Disney channels.

However, those new films have to stream on Netflix first for a particular amount of time. That means that No Way Home at least won’t be coming right away. Another issue is the fact that this deal is only relevant to the US, meaning that the rest of the world likely won’t see Spidey movies on the service for some time to come.

If you are looking for your Spidey fix on Disney Plus, you can see Tom Holland’s webslinger in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and you can always check out some of the classic Spider-Man animated series in the Disney Plus library too.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking over the small screen in a big way, with smash hits like WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier already racking up major streaming numbers — and shows for Loki, Hawkeye, and She-Hulk on the way. But recently, MCU heads everywhere have felt their Spidey-sense a-tingling: when is Spider-Man coming to Disney+?

The good news is that the absence of your friendly neighborhood webslinger from the streaming platform Mickey Mouse built is almost over. Here’s the scoop on when Spider-Man will be swinging onto Disney+.

IS SPIDER-MAN COMING TO DISNEY+?

Yes! Spider-Man is coming to Disney+, so Tom Holland and Zendaya fans, rejoice: Deadline reports that Disney and Sony have inked a multi-year pact to make Spider-Man a part of Disney+, with new films released between 2022 and 2026 moving to the platform after landing first at Netflix. The deal also includes library rights to the Spider-Man franchise.

“This landmark multi-year, platform agnostic agreement guarantees the team at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution a tremendous amount of flexibility and breadth of programming possibilities to leverage Sony’s rich slate of award-winning action and family films across our direct-to-consumer services and linear channels,” said Chuck Saftler, head of Business Operations for ABC, according to Deadline.

And it’s not just Disney+. A whole universe of the company’s broadcast destinations are on board, including ABC, FX, and Freeform. Deadline reports the official announcement as saying that the deal, “gives Disney enormous programming potential across its platforms and makes them key destinations for a robust collection of Spider-Man films.”

WHEN IS SPIDER-MAN COMING TO DISNEY+?

  • Stream It Or Skip It: 'Morbius' on Netflix, a Marvel/Sony Vampire Movie in Which Jared Leto Doesn't Eat the Scenery

  • Stream It Or Skip It: 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' on VOD, in Which Spider-Man, Spider-Man and Spider-Man Face the Fight of Their Lives

  • 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Has an Under the Radar 'Daredevil' Easter Egg

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Mid-Credits Scene Ties up That Weird ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ End Credits Scene

The specifics of Spidey hitting Disney+ were not announced, but we can make some potentially educated guesses. Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third part of the Tom Holland-starring trilogy, debuts in theaters on December 17, 2021, meaning it’s not technically part of this deal. However, under the new deal Sony’s library titles — which include the Tobey Maguire starring Spider-Man movies, as well as the Andrew Garfield starring Amazing Spider-Man movies, and both earlier Holland MCU movies — could start hitting platforms as early as June, according to Variety.

All of this is subject to pre-existing deals, meaning you shouldn’t expect to boot up Disney+ on June 1 and start watching the complete, totally coherent Spider-Man series. But chances are good that (again, depending on how current streaming deals are contracted), you could be watching at least some of them before the end of 2021. For example, Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently only streamable on fuboTV, making it a likely prospect to hop over to Disney+. On the other hand, Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently on Starz, which is still in negotiation with Sony, so its fate is a little more up in the air.

Back to No Way Home, if it does fall under the new deal (is December 17 technically next year? Maybe!), then you’ll have to wait a while. New Sony titles will hit Netflix approximately 18 months after they leave theaters. The length of time those movies will be on Netflix could vary, but some time after that, they’ll hit Disney+. That means it could be between 19 months or longer before No Way Home joins the other Spider-Man movies on the service. By that point, Peter Parker will be a full-grown adult!

HOW TO WATCH DISNEY+

Disney+ is available for $8/mo. or $80 annually. You can also bundle Disney+ with Hulu and ESPN for $14/mo., or get the bundle ad-free for $20/mo.
