5.0 out of 5 stars Great Smart Lock

So initially I was a little torn about purchasing this lock solely because some of the negative reviews. However after watching a YouTube video with a professional locksmith review this lock and two other smart locks and him saying that you couldn’t go wrong with any of them I bit the bullet. I picked the Kwikset because of its ability for you to rekey their locks by yourself. I have always had Kwikset since I built my house and loved that the few locks I have replaced over the years I can just rekey and no worries about making new keys for everyone that has keys. So the Kwikset Halo is very easy to install. In fairness I already had a deadbolt I was replacing so I did not have to measure and drill new holes for lock to be installed. Here is what I think may be causing some negative reviews, Not following the instructions step by step and/or correctly. They are very detailed and even explain that if you don’t do this step in this order correctly that lock may not work properly. Installation took me about 25 minutes taking my time and double checking every step. Set up of Smart lock feature/ connecting to WiFi, completing firmware update and setting up app/account was about half that time. Once lock was completely installed here is my list of pros and possible cons I found.Pros1. Ease if installation2. Smart feature is via blue tooth through your WiFi so no need for special hub.3. Quality and looks are very nice and keypad is touch screen not buttons4.Several ways to unlock- key, touch pad code, by using app and even using Alexa ( once set up in Alexa app). Great to have all these options if you need to allow people in your house for a temporary reason.5. App allows you to monitor who is coming into house and also if door is locked or unlocked.6. Reasonable cost when compared to other smart locks containing the same features.Possible Cons1. Lock noise when locking and unlocking. A litte louder because of electronic movements.2. LED status light flashes every 5 seconds, (however just found out that this feature can also be turned off I believe)3. Battery cover on inside part of lock is screwed down during installation and requires face plate to be removed to reach battery compartment. ( However once again discovered that if you don’t screw in this cover, you can just slide the cover in place after installation. It holds extremely well. Which allows you to just slide up cover to get to batteries when needed.4. If you are someone that doesn’t like to follow instructions this may lead to problems for you.5. If you have poor WiFi reception near where lock is going to be installed this may effect lock operation.Overall I am super pleased with this lock so far. I have not had it long enough to comment on battery life or durability when it comes to how long lock will last. I know other Kwikset locks come with a lifetime warranty. However this has a one year warranty. Probably because of the electronics integrated in this lock.

Update 10-11-2022
It seems that things have settled down now power wise. I put in new set of batteries in early August and they are now down to 50% so I would guess it’s possible to get 4 months of use out of one set of batiereis ( I am using Energizer) and this is acceptable to me. I still wish I could add an battery pack with C batieres to it….

It does seem to be worthy of 4 stars so I am upgrading my review to reflect that….;

I am pretty impressed with many aspects and features of this Kwikset halo WIFI Smart lock.
UPDATE 7-23-2022
The battery level has held steady at 80% until now. We manually lock it form the inside and lock/unlock is below 10 per day.
So for now I am happy. i will do another update in a month.

Original review
Its very solidly built with a lot of thought gone into the design of it.
It looks good
Touchpad is quite responsive, certainly more than good enough for its purpose
Installation took a while longer because the unit I received from Amazon did not behave as expected (it turned out to be defective)
Connecting to Bluetooth was OK, also was connecting to wifi.
I had to fine tune the lock assembly to remove a slight drag as the dead-bolt reciprocated to lock and unlock positions.
As mentioned in parentheses, the amazon lock was defective and i had to return it. I bought a replacement for the same price from a local big box hardware store.
This installation went faster because it was second time around and I had already uninstalled the Amazon bought lock.
I installed the app on my Pixel 6 Pro it was fairly straightforward if a little laborious.

Here is where things are a bit uncertain…
By the way, I have set the auto-lock to off and manually lock it from the inside.

The first day, the battery level was at 100%
Second day it dropped to 90%
Third day between 07.00 and 14.00 the battery level dropped to an alarming 60%
There was less usage than the 10 locks/unlocks so the usage was fair, so I was alarmed at such a drop.
Fourth Day, the battery level went back up to 70% then later in the day to 75%
Fifth Day, it went up again to 80%
Its mid afternoon now on the fifth day and its holding steady at 80%
At 60% I was ready to return it, because using 40% in 3 days was outrageous but it has given itself a reprieve and I am carefully monitoring the battery usage. This reviews is using the 4 batteries that came with the unit.

This is a really good lock that ideally needs an optional battery pack with size C batteries that can be attached to the door close to the unit. If I can get 4 months usage out of the batteries I would be happy, I will be doing follow up reviews as to how this goes.
I do agree with Kwikset that there must be NO drag on the deadbolt or this will eat the battery. I have carefully made sure there is no drag and have also adjusted the lower lock to make sure the door closes soothly in line with the deadbolt.

I love the convenience of this smart lock, The ability to lock/unlock this form anywhere is a real boon to me.
One recommendation is to use manual lock so when you close the door you manually lock it, this will save a lot of battery. I also carry a key and sometimes use that instead of using the motor.
Also, i have used several smart locks (non wifi) and this is the best of all of them even considering the battery concerns.
I wish it had a fingerprint reader but for what is is is excellent with room for improvement. AN aftermarket battery pack for be very welcome…

So far I approve, stay tuned for updates,,,,

Installation wasn’t too difficult but took some patience. Setting it up on the app took several tries and a few factory resets and I don’t know why, but after watching a YouTube video on how to reset it, it eventually synced up and works fine so far. I use this on an Airbnb and it’s convenient to have multiple codes with time restrictions for cleaners, guests, and handymen. I love that I can see when it’s unlocked and locked. I may replace the lock on my personal home with one of these if it lasts and is reliable. I haven’t had it long enough to comment on the battery life or reliability over time, but will update if either is an issue. So far I think this was a great buy.

We recently purchased a home and the first thing on our to-do list was to change out the locks. When traveling, we have a pet-sitter stay with our dogs while we're gone so something that would be easy to monitor was key. Right after closing on our home and moving, we had a trip planned, when the pet sitter came over I was able to program her chosen code as she stood there, and then had her test it. While we were gone, we could get alerts for every time the door was locked and unlocked. This might have been overkill as we also installed a Ring doorbell, but it also integrates well with Amazon devices, and if I can't remember if I locked the backdoor, I can just ask the devices and they'll let me know.

My only complaint is that when I ask to have the doors locked, it always jams. But I think this has more to do with a need to alter the strike plate.

This lock would be great for a short-term rental, you could see when renters entered and left, and also have a separate code for your cleaning team to monitor the turnover. And the codes are easy to change as well for added security.

Bought this lock because my poor husband has OCD and whether or not he remembered to lock the door sent him returning home so many times. Now he can just check his phone and see it’s locked and he can lock it if it’s not. Only issue I’ve seen is it will occasionally say JAMMED when locking it with the app. The door is locked but it says it’s jammed. Not sure if we need to make the hole a little bigger. My husband thinks it’s loud but I actually like that because I know it is working. Over all I am happy with this purchase

So the lock itself is great! It’s a sleek look, works great with the app but found out that upon actual installation, the previous deadbolt place on my door jam wasn’t deep enough and that’s why I got the “jam” notification. We dug it out some more so it could basically go deeper into the door jam and haven’t had a problem with it luckily. Batteries are holding well as I use it multiple times a day and it’s over 80% after 3 weeks

We bought 2 on amazon a year ago, and it's been going great! No more key to carry. Kids can open doors by themselves easily. I can give different codes to my housekeeper, extended family, etc. You can also lock door using app if you're in a hurry or forgot. LOVE IT. Then, the customer service is SO excellent. You call them, and a person talks to you quickly every time I've called. My friends say the same thing about their customer service. They know the products and are so helpful, too. They must go through a lot of training because they know answers to all the questions. Highly recommend this product and company!

Took a little research in a hood lock and came up with this one, easy to install and setup, it a little noisy though when locked and unlocking unde it own power, tones of users and notifications on who unlocked and the app is pretty easy with tons of features… I read a lot of complaints about the touch pad, the issue was resolved, when you touch the pad it will give you 2 numbers to push before you enter your code… super easy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Weird latch!

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on December 18, 2020

We were replacing an existing lock that had recently failed but Amazon next day to the rescue. Unfortunately the latch for this thing is a weird non-standard little up and down slat (see pic). I've never seen a lock like this! Is it some kind of European thing? No idea. But of course it doesn't work in our standard round hole. The proper part is described as "latch B" and of course it's not included. So I can call customer service and wait 4 to 6 weeks for them to ship me the right latch all while my door is unlocked. Or I can send this thing back to Amazon and go over to the local big box retail store and pick up a proper lock. Which I should have done in the first place. Arrrrgh!

3.0 out of 5 stars Alexa skill doesn’t work in Canada

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on August 20, 2021

Lock was easy to install and the interactive guide was quite helpful. However, the main reason I bought this lock was to unlock it with Alexa. But when I tried to set it up, I got an error message stating that I can use it due to ‘geographic restrictions’.

This is very frustrating and I feel somewhat misled. There ARE customers outside of the US in case, you know. This is pretty relevant information that should be prominently displayed somewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Most difficult piece of junk ever

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on July 7, 2020

Getting this lock to connect to Bluetooth on the phone was the first challenge, have to do a factory reset over and over just to get it connected. Then connecting to the WiFi oh Lord I nearly took an axe to this thing. Took me over 2 hours of repeating the setup until finally it connected. This was not the first time this process had to be done, same for both experiences with the second being due to a router change and needing to reconnect. Very very frustrating piece of junk. Really regret getting this unit.

Why is my Kwikset keypad not working?

My Keypad Is Unresponsive Test each button on the keypad (one at a time), and listen for a beep as each button is pressed. If beeping is not heard on all buttons, replace the batteries. If battery replacement does not solve the problem, contact Kwikset Support at 1-866-863-6584.

How do you wake up a Kwikset lock?
