Massage therapist that accept blue cross blue shield near me

Does your health insurance cover massage therapy?

We get many calls from people interested in learning whether or not their health insurance covers massage therapy.

With the exception of HMOs and Medicare, which generally do not pay for massage therapy, in many other cases benefits are available for massage through insurance if there is a prescription from a treating physician. Also, those who have been injured in an automobile accident or have a workers compensation claim, or some coverage related to a “slip and fall” type injury, are almost always covered by some injury related insurance massage benefit. Body Well mostly works with this later category of patients (auto injury and workers comp claims) and can do so on a nationwide basis.

It is difficult if not impossible to get in home massage through regular major medical insurance like Blue Cross/ Blue Shield, Cigna, United Health Care (UHC), Aetna, etc. However it is possible, if your doctor’s office is willing to bill this themselves, for massage therapy to occur at the doctor’s facility. Unfortunately this is not offered in many places, and frankly many doctor’s do not even know how to successfully bill for therapeutic massage so they don’t bother! Supervision by a physician (meaning the doctor must be on site) is generally required which is why this is not feasible in home.

When benefits are available, Body Well has the ability to provide insurance-paid therapeutic massage in the convenience of our client’s own home every day of the week, often at no cost to the insured party. If you or someone you know has sustained an injury that could benefit from massage therapy, or if your physician has already prescribed it and you are interested in receiving in at home therapy, please call us or fill out our form online and we can determine if benefits are available. You can also visit another page with additional specific information about how we can perform massage through insurance.

As massage therapy continues to gain acceptance in the medical community, we hope that we will see increased coverage for in home massage, even from HMOs and Medicare, so that everyone, including those of limited economic means, those who are disabled and have difficult leaving the home, and the elderly who can benefit from therapeutic massage so profoundly, can take advantage of this form of natural, drug-free healthcare. Hopefully, with time, insurance will start to cover more for those that cannot afford these types of products and or services.

Getting started

Start the conversation with your primary care provider (PCP).
Your PCP can be a good place to begin your mental health journey. They’ll help evaluate whether your physical health could be impacting your mental health. They'll also provide guidance on what care options to consider. It's important to be open and honest in your conversation with your PCP. Make a list of questions and symptoms in advance to make the most of your appointment.

To find a primary care provider near you, use our Find a Doctor & Estimate Costs tool. Sign in before starting your search, to be sure your results are in your network.

If you're a Massachusetts resident, consider trying Firefly Health, an independent health care provider offering virtual primary care via video and chat with an experienced, physician-led team. Once you sign up with a Firefly Health PCP,* the Firefly care team will help you create a personalized care plan designed to cover your care needs, including those related to behavioral health.** Learn more at Firefly Health.

*Firefly Health is currently available to members in Massachusetts only.
**When you need to be seen in person, Firefly will get you the care you need.

Therapy is a powerful tool that can support a wide range of needs. Many people use therapy simply to have someone listen and provide guidance and support in a judgment-free setting. Therapy can also help manage a diagnosed mental illness.

Here’s a list of the most common indicators that therapy may be right for you, from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

  • Experiencing ongoing conflict with family or friends
  • Feeling isolated or alone
  • Trouble focusing on work, school, daily tasks
  • Using a substance to cope with issues in your life
