& General Information Regarding Fish Oil Supplementation

Milk bone skin and coat reviews

Have you ever just slowly gone down the pet aisle looking for nothing in particular, but a product catches your eye. You see a happy dog on the front, a label that says “vet formulated or recommended”, and in this particular case advertising your dog’s inner glow! Sounds too good to be true for one small supplement right? It is. The concept is there though. Omega 3’s and fatty acids can be healthy for your pet when in the correct formulation and concentration. They strengthen the skin barrier, can help protect the heart, and even have joint benefits. Whats important to realize here is that concentration matters! It can be confusing picking a correct supplement but we are here to simplify things with this product review.

How much is enough?

The recommended dosage for dogs is 50-100 mg per kg of body weight. Take your pets weight in lbs and divide by 2.2 to covert to kg then multiple by 100 and you have the recommended dosage of omega 3’s. Dogs with osteoarthritis need higher doses, up to (310 mg/kg0.75 of EPA/DHA per day). If using for significant osteoarthritis, I recommend working with your veterinarian to determine adequate dosing. For the average dog without severe osteoarthritis, you can use this handy table to calculate dosage here.

The type matters. Fish products typically contain high omega 3 levels with appropriate EPA/DHA ratios. We do not recommend cod liver as it is high in vitamin D and vitamin A. Fish oil is what we recommend.

Looking at the back of this label, the first thing you want to notice is the ingredients. Potato starch, glycerin, potato flour, molasses are not overall healthy for your pet. The oils that are included in these treats are flaxseed, sunflower, and canola oil. (No fish oil included).

Additionally, for a 40 lb dog, it is recommended to feed 1 chew a day. However from what we have learned we know that a 40 lb dog (18.18 kg) needs a minimum of 50 mg/kg fish oil daily to see benefits. Thats a total of 909 mg. One of these chews only has 100 mg! Thats a drastic under dosing.

Hypothetically speaking, if one fed 9 chews to meet the daily intake (NOT recommended) this entire bottle would only last 6 days. It costs $19 which in our opinion is not worth the cash. It also has 15 calories per treat which can add up!

Overall: NOT recommended

We do highly recommend supplementing with fish oil. Fish oil is a great supplement for skin, joint, heart, and neurologic function. Below are our recommended products based on concentration and source of omega 3’s.
