THE SCHOOL BOARD IS TRYING TO ADDRESS A $24 MILLION COST OVERRUN FOR THE PHILO-HILL MAGNET MIDDLE SCHOOL RENOVATION. OFFICIALS SAY MATERIAL SUPPLY ISSUES AND LABOR SHORTAGES ARE TO BLAME. TO FILL THE GAP, THE DISTRICT IS LOOKING AT SCALING BACK OR POSTPONING SOME PROJECTS, INCLUDING AT EAST FORSYTH HIGH SCHOOL. YOU CAN LEARN ABOUT THE PROPOSED CHANGES AT A DROP-IN MEETING. IT BEGINS AT 4:30 IN THE WINSTON-SALEM/FORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOLS EDUCATION BUILDING. THAT IS ON BETHANIA STATION ROAD. THIS AFTERNOON AT 2:00, FORSYTH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WILL VOTE ON ALLOCATING THE COUNTY’S REMAINING FEDERAL COVID-19 RELIEF MONEY. STAFF HAS BEEN REVIEWING FUNDING REQUESTS FOR THE FINAL $22.7 MILLION IN AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN FUNDS. THE PROPOSED SPENDING INCLUDES COUNTY PROJECTS, LOCAL NON-PROFITS, AND FOR ADDITIONAL REVENUE LOSS CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC. THE NORTH CAROLINA WILDLIFE RESOURCES COMMISSION WILL HOST A PUBLIC FORUM TONIGHT ABOUT CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE. CWD IS A DEADLY DISEASE THAT IMPACTS WHITE-TAILED DEER AND SOME OTHER ANIMALS. EARLIER THIS YEAR, TWO DEER IN YADKIN COUNTY TESTED POSITIVE. THAT LED THE WILDLIFE REGULATORS TO ESTABLISH A CWD SURVEILLANCE AREA IN EIGHT COUNTIES AROUND WHERE THOSE CASES WERE DISCOVERED. TONIGHT’S MEETING BEGINS AT 6:30. IT’S AT THE FORSYTH COUNTY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION CENTER. THAT’S ON FAIRCHILD ROAD IN WINSTON-SALEM. TWO MORE MEETINGS WILL BE HELD NEXT WEEK. THOSE ARE HAPPENING SEPTEMBER 29 IN WILKES COUNTY AND OCTOBER 4 IN YADKIN COUNTY. NEW HERE AT NOON, A SPECIAL EVENT IS TAKING PLACE IN DAVIDSON COUNTY TODAY, DESIGNED TO GIVE LOCAL VETERANS A DAY ON THE WATER. OPERATION NORTH STATE IS HOLDING A FISHING EVENT ON HIGH ROCK LAKE. THE EVENT HAS BEEN PAUSED FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC. BUT BOATERS AND VETERANS RETURNED TO THE WATER THIS MORNING TO GO FISHING.
