I would actually recommend Studio Cityfor safety and convenience. A relatively close drive to anything you'd want to see as a tourist in LA (and close to freeways). You'll also be close to a lot of good restaurants and Universal Studios Hollywood. Studio City is also a pretty safe area with more nice, mid-range hotels.

Lots of options depending on what you're planning to do!

Beach cities:

Santa Monica - really nice beach city, and pretty upscale. Borders Pacific Palisades as well which is even nicer. Venice Beach is a little less safe than both but has a bit of a grungy vibe.

If you're looking to be a little more central, then West Hollywood is a good option - easy to get all places. Same goes for Beverly Hills although it's a bit further than the freeway.

I don't recommend staying Hollywood / East Hollywood or in Inglewood. Some parts of Mid-city are hit and miss as well.

We spent a couple of weeks in an apartment on Sunset and Hayworth and found the area very safe. I often walked around the area alone early in the morning or after dark and never felt unsafe.
