New Super Mario Bros. U Co-Op Review - Page 2

As with the campaign, all of the extra modes can be played in co-op.

We’ve written about the co-op in the New Super Mario Bros. series twice before, and for the most part, it’s identical to what came with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Up to four players can play at the same time, hopping and bopping their way through the Mushroom Kingdom. As with NSMBWii, this mode can be chaotic. The camera will follow the player in the “lead”, which leads to some untimely deaths for your slower co-op partners. Unlike its predecessors, I didn’t find it to be quite as frustrating, and New Super Mario Bros. U adds a new twist which ends up being pretty neat.

The twist is that a fifth player can take the WiiU GamePad and provide support via “Boost Mode”. The player in Boost Mode is able to assist the other four players in a variety of ways - tapping on the play field creates extra platforms, which can create new paths to Star Coins, or even catch a player who is about to fall to their doom. You can also tap on enemies to momentarily stun them, knock Koopa Troopas into their shells, or even deflect projectiles. If players jump on enough Boost-created platforms in a row, a meter will fill up, allowing the player using the GamePad to tap on enemies to destroy them.

One of these days, Nintendo will release a co-op Mario game that delivers on all of the potential inherent in the idea. For now, New Super Mario Bros. U is about as close as they’ve come. Boasting the best 2D Mario action since the SNES days, shiny new HD graphics, and a fun & challenging set of levels to play through, this is an easy recommendation.

Verdict

The Co-Op Experience: Team up with four friends through the game. A fifth player can use the WiiU GamePad to assist the other four players by creating extra platforms and disrupting enemies.

  3. Questions about character options with multiplayer

I saw an old, closed topic but first I want to confirm: If play single player, can I be anyone or just Mario?

On multiplayer, can all 4 players choose who they want to be? Can two people be Toadette (if playing with 2 inexperienced players)?

I generally will be P1 and usually want to play as Luigi not Mario.

Yea and yes. If playing by yourself you can play as any character, and in multiplayer you can both be the same character, though I suppose there are moments where it would get confusing.

So it is still possible to play as both blue and yellow Toads in MP.

I believe no, you cannot have two players play the same character. Blue and yellow toad are considered the same character.

so now we have conflicting answers for my second question, can two players both choose the same character? Like 2x Toadette and 2x Toad or not?

Granted I have not actually tried selecting the same character for both player 1 and player 2, but I do know that, when I play with my spouse, after player 1 picks their character it does not remove that character from player 2's options, so I just assumed it meant they could pick them, as well. I'm not sure what would actually happen if they tried. Sorry for answering prematurely. (In my defense, it sounds the other answer was only just a guess, too, lol.)

I don't have the game, but as far as I know, no. That's why some people complained that two players couldn't play as Toad.

I considered to ask you about this, but since I don't have the game, I decided to wait for another user to do the job. :)

2 players can't play as the same character, but Toadette and Nabbit are both easy characters so if you're playing with two inexperienced players it shouldn't be a problem.

I played as nabbit briefly and thought he was an expert character because he doesn't get power ups thus always has just one hit. I thought he was for pros who have already beaten the game

Nabbit cannot be hurt by enemies

Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight? Wakarimasu ka?!
