We put The Ordinary 100% Cold-Pressed Argan Oil to the test after receiving a complimentary sample from the brand. Keep reading for our full product review.

I was first introduced to the concept of face oil when all of my friends were spending what was, in my opinion, way too much money on the Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum. I splurged on a bottle myself, and while I enjoyed using it, once the bottle was empty, I decided to table my face oil efforts for the foreseeable future—I hadn’t noticed a huge difference in my skin. And as an early 2000s teenager, I remain a little wary of putting oil on my face, even though I now know that it doesn’t actually cause acne.

But when I got the chance to try The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Argan Oil, I was excited: I really like The Ordinary as a brand, and I was excited to see what a much less expensive oil could do for my face. Here’s how it worked for me.

About My Skin: Not too dry, not too oily

For the most part, my skin cooperates pretty well. I had a year-long bout of postpartum hormonal acne, but that seems to be mostly resolved (fingers crossed). That being said, it still produces more oil at certain times of the month than others, and it tends to dry out in winter.

As for my hair (which The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Argan Oil is also good for!), I try to wash it just a few times a week, and by day three, my hair tends to get a little greasy—especially because I have the bad habit of touching my hair quite a bit.

The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Argan Oil is definitely a high-quality oil, and I can see it being really helpful for someone dealing with dry skin or hair.

The Feel: On the lighter side

One of my main complaints about body and face oils is that they leave a residue. As someone who showers at night, I’ve climbed into bed covered in oil more times than I can count, only to see it on my pajamas and sheets the next way. The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Argan Oil is much lighter than other oils I’ve tried. While I haven’t slathered it all over my body, it doesn’t leave behind much of a residue on my face.

The Smell: Nonexistent

I’m not totally opposed to scented skincare products, but this is one of the first new products I’ve tried in a while that is completely without scent. Interestingly, when I read some of the reviews, a lot of people talked about how terrible it smelled—but I truly couldn’t detect a smell at all. In many ways, scent-free is better: You don’t have to worry about what’s in it (like added fragrances) or worry about a lingering smell.

The Packaging: On the smaller side

At just one ounce, this is a tiny bottle of oil. The good news is it’s fine for face and hair—a little goes a long way. If I were planning to use this on my body, however, I would find the size of this bottle a little annoying. And truth be told, when my skin gets super dry in the winter months, I can see myself putting this on such spots, like my elbows. All that to say: I wish this bottle were just a little bit bigger.

The Ingredients: Just one

I love a skincare product with just one ingredient because I don’t have to worry about any sneaky, harmful ingredients. Knowing this oil only has 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil is comforting—I know that’s a good ingredient that won’t cause any harm.

The Results: Good for hydration and, therefore, not something I would (need to) use every day

The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Argan Oil is definitely a high-quality oil, and I can see it being really helpful for someone dealing with dry hair or skin. I can also really see it benefiting me in the winter months when my skin does get drier. Right now, though, it’s humid out, so my skin is already in a hydrated place. I’ve been using this about once a week, but I can’t imagine using it more than that.

I did try this on my hair, but I’m not sure it’s for me. Like I said, I like to wash my hair just a few times a week, so adding extra oil to it when it already gets greasy by day three feels unnecessary.

The Value: Very affordable

The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Argan Oil is a very affordable oil, especially when I compare it to Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum, which is even smaller in size yet astronomically expensive in price. At just $7, there’s not a lot to complain about when it comes to the price, except that I’d be willing to pay a little bit more for a slightly bigger bottle.

Similar Products: As far as face oils go, this one is most reasonable

Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum ($185): One of the only face oils I’ve consistently used is the Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum. I spent $185 on this tiny bottle of oil because everyone I knew was using it at the time (which was in 2018). I loved it: I loved the way it smelled, and I loved how smooth my skin was. At the same time, every single time I used it, I marveled at the fact that I had shelled out nearly $200 for it. Was it worth it? I didn’t think so. While The Ordinary’s 100% Cold-Pressed Argan Oil doesn’t smell quite as good (or like much of anything) and is less suited to daily use, I have to admit that as far as the smoothness of my face goes, the effect is similar.

($13):Bio-Oil Skincare OilMore recently, I tried the Bio-Oil Skincare Oil. I liked this oil a lot, and the price point is similar. That being said, it served a different purpose: The Bio-Oil is supposed to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks, while The Ordinary’s 100% Cold-Pressed Argan Oil is more about moisturizing the face and hair. In all, in terms of the moisture these oils added to my face, there’s not a huge difference.

Final Verdict

Need a little moisture in your life? This is a great option.
