Lyrics

This is the song that never ends,
and it goes on and on, my friends.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was,
Therefore they continue singing it forever just because…
This is the song that never ends,
and it goes on and on, my friends.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was,
Therefore they continue singing it forever just because…
This is the song that never ends,
and it goes on and on, my friends.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was,
Therefore they continue singing it forever just because…

About

The origin of the song is unknown, but it became popular when it was used in the children's show "Lamb Chop's Play-Along" with lyrics altered a bit. It would start at the end of each episode the puppet characters and children would all sing it while annoying hostess Shari Lewis. The singing would soon die down releaving Lewis of her annoyance, that is until puppet character Charlie Horse would soon start it again, Lewis then stops him from doing so.

I've noticed this mentioned in passing in older threads but I think it deserves more attention. When did "this is the song that never ends" become "the song that doesn't end"?

According to wikipedia, both versions have been used but scouring through you tube I can't find any lamb chop episode using the "never ends" lyric. There is literally no video evidence of anything other than "doesn't end".

I watched this show almost every day after getting off school as a child and the 'new' version sounds so wrong with the word 'doesn't '. Even the singing itself sounds way more grating than I remember it being.

This one has me shaken up just as much as Berenstain and the Mr. Rogers theme. Hearing the song that doesn't end literally sends a chill down my spine.

Furthermore I've never heard this song anywhere other than the lamb chop show so if the "never ends" iteration was used elsewhere I wasn't exposed to it. So I have zero reason to think it was "never ends" beyond hearing it sung that way as a child.

The Song That Never Ends Lyrics

This is the song that never ends.
It just goes on and on, my friend.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was.
And, they’ll continue singing it forever, just because
This is the song that never ends…

(repeat forever)

The Song That Doesn't End AKA The Song That Never Ends is the closing theme of Lamb Chop's Play-Along. At the end of each episode, the puppets and children would sing several verses of the song while hostess Shari Lewis would try in vain to stop them. They would eventually leave (on her urging), even while beginning a sixth verse (which eventually fades away). Then the puppet character Charlie Horse would return and try to get to sing the song again. But Shari, however, stops him successfully by grabbing his mouth (keeping him from singing it again, before he tries to get to sing it) and orders him to "go away". Charlie Horse does leave but slams the door before Shari could tell him not to. After the door is slammed, she faces the audience with an exasperated expression and says "door", but at least is now in peace and quiet with Charlie, Lamb Chop, and the group gone.

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

And they'll continue singing it forever just because...

Trivia[]

A short rendition of the song appeared in a skit on the animated TV show Cartoon Planet (the skit is also featured on the companion album, Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Que). Brak sings the song until he is asked to stop by Zorak, who finds it annoying. Brak explains that he is unable to because it's the "song that doesn't end." He attempts to continue until Zorak loses his temper, causing Brak to cease, remarking, "I guess it just ended."
