I just discovered this feature and I get it, I used it and it is pretty cool! Having said that, I am not a car guy and, for my edification, what is the overall purpose? To just not have to hold the brake down? I would think that if you got rear-ended with auto hold on you would lurch forward into possibly the next car.

Yes, to keep brake on without you pressing the pedal. It can stop your car from rolling down backwards on steep hills too, but many cars have hill start assist. Auto brake hold works full time, where as hill start only work on an incline.

If someone hit you from the rear, how would auto hold make your car lurch forward? If anything, I would think a person would more likely release the brake due to the force of the impact. Anyway, if there is enough force you'll be pushed into the front vehicle, brake or not.

Makes sense. I get it now. Especially the crash part. Thanks.

The "auto hold" is truly a unique feature.......I have had vehicles that have had the "hill hold" so that you don't roll backwards after stopping, but never a vehicle that will hold at ALL TIMES after you apply the brake and bring the vehicle to a full stop......it takes some getting used to as there will be no "creep forward" once you come to a complete stop. So far I have not made a decision as to whether I like it or not.....

As a father of a two year old, I found this feature on my X3 incredibly useful in a drive through line or even at a red light. If for whatever reason I have to turn around to focus my attention on my daughter while stopped, it’s a life saver. I’ve never really had my foot slip off the brake before except for a few times while I was turned around, but was quick enough to slam back on it. Just my two cents anyway.

I’ve also found it useful to momentarily take your focus off the road at a red light. without having to put your car in park. You can reach over to pick up your takeout food that tipped over in the passenger footwell, take your sweater/jacket off if you feel hot, or if you are just stuck in gridlock traffic and don’t want to keep your foot on the brake pedal the whole time. Many scenarios where it can be useful, but I still drive most of the time with it disabled.

One additional side benefit of "auto hold" is the automatic "Stop and Go" feature using Smart Cruise Control with HDA. Both features use the same technology to keep the brakes applied.

It's weird getting used to it, but I love auto-hold so far. Really nice in drive-thru lines, and can see the huge benefit at red lights with kids in the back seat.

What is the purpose of auto hold?

Auto Hold keeps the vehicle at a complete stop until you press the accelerator. This is useful in stop-and-go traffic and at traffic lights, so you can relax your foot more comfortably. The rear brake lights remain illuminated when Auto Hold is engaged.

How do you use Auto Hold button?

To use Auto Hold, first come to a complete stop. Then, press the Auto Hold button and wait for the hold light to come on in your dash. You can then let your foot off the brake.
