Depends...: That all depends on how much soft tissue and bone was removed at the time of surgery. I have patients who can use a straw as soon as a week post surgery. However the risk of dry socket (what happens when the healing blood clot gets sucked out by pressure) is too great so do not use a straw for 2-4 weeks. What did your dentist say when they sent you home? 4.3k viewsReviewed >2 years ago Dentistry - Cosmetic 44 years experience Straw sucking OK now: Getting crazy thinking about the nonsensical dangers of post-op, sucking through a straw? Every time one swallows, a sucking action occurs! if i was really concerned about a dry socket, i would avoid swishing/rinsing and most importantly keep my oral bacteria count low by flossing daily, especially the back wall of the tooth that abuts the extraction. Also, take any prescribe meds. 4.3k viewsReviewed >2 years ago Similar questionsA 33-year-old member asked: What to do if i drank through a straw after wisdom teeth removal?2 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in Dentistry 55 years experience Oops...: You should be fine. When can I use straw after wisdom teeth?Do not use straws for the first 2 weeks. Drink from a glass. The sucking motion can cause more bleeding by dislodging the blood clot. Eat any nourishing food that can be taken with comfort.
Can I use a straw 7 days after tooth extraction? No Spitting: Do not spit for the first 7 days. Spitting can dislodge a blood clot, triggering bleeding and severe dry socket pain. If you feel like you need to spit, gently rinse water in your mouth and then let the water passively fall into the sink. No Straws: Avoid straws for 7 days.
