Derek Jeter will star with his wife, fashion model and television host Hannah Jeter, in the Grand Wagoneer's new "Eyes Wide Open" campaign as part of a long-term partnership.

DETROIT — New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter and his wife, Hannah Jeter, have agreed to a multiyear deal with Jeep to promote the company's Grand Wagoneer SUV.

The Hall of Fame shortstop and Hannah Jeter, a model and television host, will star in a new ad campaign for the full-size luxury SUV. A 60-second ad featuring the vehicle and couple was broadcast Friday night during game one of Major League Baseball's World Series between the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Olivier Francois, chief marketing officer of Stellantis, which owns Jeep, said the Jeters were selected because of their family, rise to fame and connection to Michigan. Derek Jeter grew up in the state and it's where the large SUV is being produced.

"We needed a personality that symbolizes American success," Francois told reporters during a media briefing. "They are just the embodiment of the American dream."

Stellantis, which was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and France-based Groupe PSA in January 2021, declined to comment on the cost of the partnership and ad campaign.

The Grand Wagoneer, which can top $110,000 when fully loaded, is a three-row luxury SUV. It is an important product as the quintessential American SUV brand attempts to move upmarket.

Francois, who is well known for creative ads with celebrities, compared the new campaign to a 2011 Super Bowl ad with Detroit rapper Eminem.

Much like the Eminem ad, the commercial with the Jeters cuts between scenic city sites, a vehicle and the stars, with a voiceover dramatically discussing rebirth, dreams and success.

The campaign was filmed in New York City, including Greenwich Village, as well as upstate New York. It was created in partnership with Highdive agency in Chicago.

The new ads have the actress, and mother of two, promote the Chrysler Pacifica in what can only be described as absurd hijinks. The five-part video series shows Hahn having fun without sacrifice as she picks up her kids from school, has a girl’s night out, or is simply unloading her groceries (in a manner of speaking).

The Pacifica she is promoting in the ad series is the new S Appearance Package. This package is available on the 2018 Pacifica Touring Plus, Touring L, Touring L Plus, and Limited models. The package features black accents both inside and out and gives the Pacifica a much more athletic look.

“This campaign spoke to me as both a mom who spends a lot of time with my kids while driving and as someone who still likes to turn up the volume after I’ve dropped them off at school,” said Kathryn Hahn in a statement.

The commercial was for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Obsidian Edition, and the happy family using it for an excursion to an upstate New York lake just happened to include one of the world’s most famous baseball players, former New York Yankee Derek Jeter, and his tennis-playing model/TV-host wife, Hannah Jeter. There were kids, too—though not actually their kids. 

The Jeters have a multi-year partnership with Jeep, and the commercial was just one element in the “Eyes Wide Open” marketing campaign. The 60-second launch spot, with some sections filmed in New York City (and a discreet reference to Detroit) debuted during the first game of the World Series on Friday.  

The setting was Forest Lake near Harriman State Park, and the interview was held on a dock affording a pristine view of changing fall colors in all directions. The backdrop was a bustling film set, complete with catering, lights, cameras, and everything necessary to capture the perfect moment. “We did this just for you,” Jeter jokes. 

The Jeters actually do have three rambunctious kids—all of them in car seats—and you can certainly imagine them getting a lot of use out of a US$100,000 three-row Grand Wagoneer for family excursions. “We wouldn’t be doing this partnership if we weren’t actually using the car,” Jeter says. “Because I couldn’t sit here claiming I love some two-seater sports car. It wouldn’t be right. My life now is that we have a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 10-month-old, and they’re in the back with their baby gear, toys, and strollers. This type of vehicle is perfect for us.”

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series Two Obsidian starts at US$105,490 in all-wheel drive trim. The 6.4-liter V8 engine produces 471 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of maximum torque, enabling a six-second zero-to-60 time. The Obsidian sits on big 22-inch wheels, and can be had with a slightly sinister blackout treatment–grille, badges, mirrors, window trim, and more. The interior can match, but if that’s too much black other colors are available. 

Derek Jeter is portrayed in the ESPN documentary series The Captain. He was the Yankees' team captain from 2003 to 2014, which may be why he likes the captain's chairs in the Jeep.

Will the Jeters, who have lived mostly in the Miami area for the last five years (following Derek’s initial involvement with the Miami Marlins), be taking long trips in their Grand Wagoneer? 

“Let me say that every trip is a long trip when you have three kids,” Derek said. Hannah adds, “I feel like we could do an Orlando Disney trip, and we also go up to Palm Beach quite a bit. And that’s like an hour in the car, and you’ve got to be comfortable on trips like that with the kids.”

Derek was born in Pequannock, N.J., but grew up mostly in Kalamazoo, Mich. “I was two and a half hours from Detroit, but the auto industry is huge in Michigan,” Jeter says. His first car was a Datsun 310 with three broken door handles, he says. “The only one that worked was the driver’s side passenger door.” Derek also remembers a sporty Mitsubishi 3000, but in 1992, at just 18, he was drafted as a first-round pick into the Yankees. And he didn’t have a lot of time for cars—it was mostly team buses and yellow cabs. After he retired, Derek acquired a Mercedes, but mostly it’s been temporary SUVs. 

“We leased a lot of big SUVs with the third row, but they were not great to drive, hard to maneuver and park,” Derek says. “The Grand Wagoneer makes perfect sense for us.”

Hannah has a similar auto history. “I grew up in the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, and my first car was a hand-me-down from my brother, a Honda Accord, I think. But then we moved to New York and after that I never had to drive,” Hannah said. “But I think I’m an incredible driver! I went from the islands, where there weren’t even multiple lanes, and very few traffic lights, and we were on the other side of the road. And now I’m taking long trips on American highways.”

During the worst parts of the Covid-19 pandemic, Derek says, “We would take the girls in the car and just drive around. I still do it. I personally like driving with the three of them—it’s Hannah who likes to go by herself. Sometimes I’ll go for coffee with them, and we have something with the girls in the back called Coffee Talk. The conversations can get very interesting, when you’re trying to answer all the questions that they ask.” 

Jeter was the Yankees’ team captain from 2003 to 2014, so he was under a lot of pressure. His preternaturally calm demeanor must have been helpful. “You have to be passionate about what you do, and I’m very passionate,” he says. “But I think I’m even-keeled as well.”

Hannah Jeter says that tennis was her idea; her story is the opposite of King Richard and the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. “Derek and I joke that he played a team sport and I played an individual sport—where it’s all on you. Neither of my parents played tennis, and it was sort of a fluke that I got into it originally. They were there to watch and support me. They could have cared less what I chose to do, as long as it was something I was going to work hard at.” 

And hard work is something the Jeters have in common. Hannah was a champion on the Caribbean National tennis team before she diversified into acting, modeling, and hosting.
