How to stay on top of your monthly bill

Each month, you’ll receive a bill for your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) health plan. It’s important to pay your premium by the first of the month. That way, you won’t risk losing health coverage due to missed payments. And you can keep using your insurance benefits with peace of mind.

We offer several options to help you stay on top of your monthly bill.

Save time and hassle with AutoPay

Want one less item on your to-do list? Let AutoPay handle your monthly bill! It’s simple to set up on Blue ConnectSM:

  • Go to the Billing & Payments page.
  • Select “Set Up AutoPay”.
  • Choose bank draft or credit card as your payment method.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to finish the process.

You’ll pay the total account balance right away. Future payments will be processed on the first of the month for credit cards — or the third of the month for bank drafts. You’ll also be enrolled in paperless billing.

Choose paperless billing

If you don’t enroll in AutoPay, you can still help us “go green” by getting monthly bills in your inbox rather than your mailbox. Just opt into paperless billing from the Billing & Payments area on Blue Connect. (Click “Edit Billing Preferences” from the main page — or opt-in under “Billing Method” when making your next payment.)

With paperless billing, we’ll send an email reminder when your invoice is available online. (NOTE: Visit How We Contact You on Blue Connect to ensure your email address is correct under the “Contact Information” tab — and that the box for “Email” is checked under the “Delivery Preferences” tab.) You’ll no longer get a bill in the mail, but you can always see billing details on Blue Connect.

YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN

The quarterback of your health care team

It’s important to have one doctor that you see regularly. (This can be a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant in Family Medicine, General Medicine, Internal Medicine or OB/GYN.) Your primary care physician should handle most of your medical needs, including preventive care and routine tests. It’s also who you can go to with any health questions or concerns.

Think of your primary care physician as your medical “home” — or the quarterback of your entire health care team. Their job is to coordinate your care and help you achieve the best health possible. Plus, out-of-pocket costs are usually lower with your primary care physician compared to other care options.

Get a wellness exam (and a $25 gift card)

Preventive care from your primary care physician — like checkups, tests and vaccinations — helps you stay healthy. It also helps you set health goals and take the right steps to reach them. Because it’s so important, Blue Cross NC will reward you for getting your annual wellness exam!

Here’s how it works:

  • Make an appointment with your in-network primary care physician for a wellness exam. Let them know that you want preventive care screenings and tests that are 100% covered by your plan.
  • Get your annual wellness exam. To avoid extra costs, ask your doctor if any tests or treatments you’re getting won’t be covered as preventive care. (Learn more here.)
  • Once we process the claim, we’ll mail you a $25 gift card certificate to redeem online.1 Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for your doctor to send us the wellness exam claim and for your gift card certificate to arrive in the mail. (Learn more about Blue Rewards here.)

We want to help you get the right care at the right place. If your primary care physician isn’t available, you have other options:

  • Health Line BlueSM: Not sure what to do about an illness or injury? Call Health Line Blue’s nurses at 1-877-477-2424. It’s fast. It’s free. And it’s available 24/7 (including holidays). Save the number in your phone now for easy access.
  • Retail Clinic: Get basic care from a nurse practitioner at these walk-in clinics with extended hours. Many are housed within stores, so they are very convenient. (One example is MinuteClinic®, found in some CVS Pharmacy® and Target® stores.)
  • Urgent Care: Urgent care centers can be a time- and money-saver when you have non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries — but you’re not able to visit your doctor. Ideal for walk-ins, after-hours and weekends.
