Call of Duty is a video game that allows the player to be in a first-person shooter role. The first Call of Duty game was released in 2003, but it has since grown into a massive franchise with over forty games in all. That’s a lot to keep track of, so we’ve created this comprehensive list of all the Call of Duty Games in order, starting from the very first one.

It started in a World War II setting, but now there are other games set in modern times, in the future, in the Cold War, and even in outer space. The game is published by Activision but has many different developers, including Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, and others that have produced several spin-offs, handheld games, and expansion packs. This article will explore the features of the Call of Duty games in order.

Call of Duty Games List: The Main Series

The main series of Call of Duty includes what I would say are sixteen core games. The original franchise is included, as well as the Modern Warfare and Black Ops story arcs. The games were made available on Microsoft PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation, and many other systems. People can argue semantics all day, but there are many Call of Duty games, spin-offs, and expansion packs. The classification of these games will differ depending on opinion. The following is a list of all Call of Duty games in order of appearance.

Call of Duty

Call of Duty was the first game in the series, released in 2003. The game reproduces the warfare of World War II from the perspective of the infantry and combined arms groups. The game follows the Red Army as well as British and American Paratroopers.

The game was revolutionary in offering a new perspective on AI-controlled allies. The computer supports the player during missions, and these AI-controlled characters respond to situational changes in the game.

Call of Duty placed a greater emphasis on this type of team-based play, which was very different from previous first-person shooter games. The game very quickly won several awards and received acclaim from reviewers.

Call of Duty is available for Mac OS X, N-Gage, PC and Steam. PC versions also include the Deluxe Edition. This package includes the United Offensive expansion pack as well as the soundtrack and Call of Duty: War Chest, which includes both Call of Duty: United Offensive and Call of Duty 2.

Call of Duty 2

This sequel to Call of Duty is also set in World War I. The game allows the player to experience play through four different soldier perspectives, including the Red Army, the United States Army, and the British Army.

There are four campaigns split up into three different stories for a total of twenty-seven missions. Call of Duty 2 adds many features, including the way health is regenerated as well as an icon that tells the player when a grenade will explode nearby.

Once again, the game received critical acclaim for graphics, sound, and regenerating health. It launched in 2005 and sold 250,000 copies in the first week after release.

Call of Duty 3

The third installment of the Call of Duty franchise was released in 2006 and available to play on the Xbox 360, Xbox, and PlayStation 2. A week later, the game was available for the PlayStation 3 as well as the Wii.

Call of Duty 3 has a campaign option for single players and focuses on the Normandy invasion. There, American, British, Polish, French, and Canadian troops pushed their way onto the coast of France. Unlike other Call of Duty campaigns, Call of Duty 3 is based on one campaign with the player switching between each nation.

Teams of up to 24 are available on Call of Duty 3, which is triple the number available on Call of Duty 2. However, the Wii did not offer a multiplayer option, and the PS2 only allowed for 16 players at a time. This was the last version of Call of Duty that was available on the original Xbox.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4 is the first game in the series to move away from its setting in World War II. As its name suggests, Modern Warfare takes place in the modern world. The fourth installment to the Call of Duty franchise was released in 2007 and was available on Windows, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and OS X.

Where previous iterations of the Call of Duty Series focused primarily on campaign-style gameplay, Call of Duty 4 offers a plot that is more like a film with varying perspectives and storylines. Additionally, CoD 4 provides various missions that give players the ability to play other characters. The move also brought the ability to use conventional weapons like night vision, plastic explosives, and assault rifles.

Modern Warfare also brings a new multiplayer feature to the table labeled “Hardcore.” With this mode, player health is dropped from 100 all the way down to 30. Friendly fire is enabled, and the heads-up display is gone. Players can also enjoy modes like Search and Destroy, Team Deathmatch, and Free-For-All, which are part of the Hardcore option.

Call of Duty: World at War

Call of Duty: World at War is the first game in the CoD “Black Ops” series. World at War was released in 2008 for home computers and all seventh-generation consoles. The gameplay for World at War is similar to what players experienced with Modern Warfare. In 2016, the game was released for the Xbox One through backward compatibility.

The World at War campaign is split into two parts: the Soviet campaign and the American campaign. There is no British campaign, which makes World at War one of the few CoD games not to feature an option for playing a British character. Players can choose between co-op and solo options. However, both choices play out the same way.

Players will experience the same multiplayer features they had with Modern Warfare. However, they can also participate in additional co-op challenges that give them extra experience, allowing them to move up in ranking quicker.

World at War is also available on the Nintendo DS, which offers a British campaign, a Pacific campaign, an American campaign, and a Soviet campaign. Compared to other Call of Duty games, World at War is considered much gorier and has a more serious tone.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

The sixth Call of Duty iteration, Modern Warfare 2, was published and released by Activision in 2009. Available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Modern Warfare 2 continues along with the gameplay and storyline as a direct sequel to Modern Warfare. The game was met with high praise, it scored a 94% on Metacritic, and it crossed the $1 billion mark in sales less than two years after its release date.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 picks up five years from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Players make their way through a variety of missions and locations, while also enjoying a Special Ops mode that includes many action-packed, high-paced missions.

Gameplay on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is similar to what players experienced with the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. There are a few tweaks that have been made, which serious users will notice right away. For example, the heads-up display is easier to read, which means players have more information to make quicker decisions.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Call of Duty: Black Ops is the seventh game in the Call of Duty franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops is a direct sequel to World at War, published and released in late 2010. Call of Duty: Black Ops differs from its predecessors by offering two countries for gameplay. However, only an American campaign is available.

Call of Duty: Black Ops also includes many new features not previously available. These include options like the ability to use a flashlight with specific weapons, as well as a dive-to-prone capability. This version of Call of Duty also allows characters to speak while players move them around.

Players still can play in multiplayer mode, and Call of Duty: Black Ops offers a few new features with this as well. One significant improvement is the ambient noise and activities that players will notice in the background. Call of Duty: Black Ops is available on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Call of duty ps4 games in order

Call of Duty’s eighth game and the fifth one on the list involving Infinity Ward is Modern Warfare 3. A direct sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, this is the third installment of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare Series.

Released in 2011, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 offers an updated MW3 4.0 engine that significantly improves the gameplaying experience. This update includes new multiplayer features, including the ability to customize and class weapons, which allows players to unlock proficiencies and attachments.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 also includes a new feature called “Survival Mode.” This feature creates an environment in which players must continually fight off waves of enemies across various maps. There is no winning in this mode, as the levels become more difficult until the player loses.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is available on PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Mac OS, and Windows.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Call of duty ps4 games in order

Jump forward in time with the first Call of Duty game available on the Wii U, an 8th generation console. Black Ops II is the ninth submission in the Call of Duty franchise, a sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops. Released in 2012, Black Ops II is available on the Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II departs from the traditional linear style of gameplay in favor of a sandbox approach. This feature means there are no back-to-back missions, which results in a more open type of campaign that takes player choice into account.

New features with Call of Duty: Black Ops II include crawling while holding weapons (previously they simply disappeared), the return of diving to prone, and character conversation while being controlled. Like other Call of Duty games, Black Ops II offers many multiplayer modes, which creates hours of entertainment for hardcore players.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of duty ps4 games in order

Call of Duty 10 is often simply referred to as Ghosts by many who are part of the CoD world. Ghosts was released in 2013, available to play on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. This iteration of the Call of Duty franchise was also a launch title with the PlayStation 4.

Ghosts is set ten years after a major catastrophic event, leaving the United States in shambles. The remaining special forces are not fighting for freedom, but survival. New features with Call of Duty: Ghosts include peeking around corners and cover as well as the ability to activate nearby hazards.

New multiplayer features in Call of Duty: Ghosts have never been seen before in the Call of Duty franchise. For example, users have access to dynamic maps, character customization, and new movements, such as sliding and seeing around corners.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

The eleventh major game in the Call of Duty Series is Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. This game was released in 2014 and became available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Xbox 360.

Moving further into the future, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare provides players with high-tech weapons, equipment, and perks. These features include specialized drones, direct-energy weapons, and hoverbikes. Additionally, Advanced Warfare introduces exoskeletons, which provide more tactical freedom than ever seen before in a Call of Duty game.

Multiplayer mode brings back a few options available in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, including Capture the Flag and Hardpoint. Call of Duty introduces a new mode called “Uplink” while bringing back an option for “War,” which was originally seen in Call of Duty 3.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Call of duty ps4 games in order

The fourth installment of the Black Ops series is Black Ops III (World at War was the first), which was announced in February of 2015 and released in November of the same year. Black Ops III was available on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows machines.

Black Ops III is a sequel to Black Ops II, following the events of its predecessor in regard to the drone strikes that took place toward the game’s finale. With a setting between 2065 and 2070, Black Ops II offers technology embedded in the battlefield itself.

New to the Call of Duty universe are Cyber Rigs and Cyber Cores, which grant players new movements as well as the ability to control and hack into robotic enemies. Black Ops III also includes a “Realistic” campaign. This feature is a mode where the player has only one hitpoint and will die from a single hit, no matter the weapon type.

Multiplayer mode has also seen some changes in Black Ops III. Users can now shoot underwater, swim, wall-run, boost jump, and power slide. Additionally, players can have the ability to customize their weapons, which includes adding up to six attachments at a time.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Call of duty ps4 games in order

Also called CoD: IW, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the thirteenth installment of the Call of Duty Series. Released in 2016, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, as well as Microsoft Windows.

The game takes place just before an attack on the planet, allowing the player to lead the remaining forces to take on the enemy. Infinite Warfare is the first Call of Duty game not available on generation seven consoles.

The gameplay is linear, with optional missions players can access. These missions offer additional assets and weapons, which aid the player throughout the storyline. While Infinite Warfare does not have a co-op option, it does offer a #YOLO mode, which results in the campaign starting over if the player dies.

Call of Duty: WWII

The fourteenth installment in the Call of Duty franchise is Call of Duty: WWII. This game in the Call of Duty Series was released in 2017 and is available to play on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, as well as Microsoft Windows PCs.

Call of Duty: WWII involves a tale of the unbreakable bond between the men fighting to save a world on the edge of oppression. Players will fight from the Normandy beaches to the forests of Germany while experiencing some of the most iconic moments of the Second World War. Call of Duty: WWII is the first game in the series set in World War II since 2008.

Multiplayer mode calls back to the roots of Call of Duty games by featuring standard movement on the ground. WWII also offers new modes, which include a simulated battle designed to attain specific objectives.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is often stylized as Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII (don’t ask us why it’s not IV). It is the fifth installment of the Black Ops subseries. It’s the first of the Call of Duty franchise that does not have a traditional single-player campaign mode.

Instead, you have a Solo Missions mode focusing on the characters’ backstories. You will embark on missions that take place chronologically between Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Black Ops III. If you choose to play in multiplayer mode, say goodbye to automatic health regeneration.

You do get a new ballistics system and predictive recoil. There are three Zombi maps located in the RMS Titanic, Ancient Rome, and the Alcatraz Penitentiary. There’s also a Battle Royale mode, or Blackout mode, featuring 100 players in every match.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the newest Call of Duty game. It’s not out yet, but hold on to your assault rifles, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s coming. This game is intended to serve as a soft reboot of the original that was released fifteen years ago. If you are among those who bought the first one when it came out, you’ll want to jump on the chance to celebrate this anniversary.

The release is planned for October of 2019, and for the first time, the game will support cross-platform multiplayer. That’s right. You can suit up on your PlayStation 4 while your ally grabs his weapon of choice on the Xbox One, and you can defeat enemies together.

The single-player campaign scores players at the end of each level on their tactical and moral choices while the multiplayer gameplay will feature campaigns focused on door breaching, night-vision, and map exploration.

Call of Duty Timeline: Side Sequels

This list is certainly not exhaustive, but here are a few of the side sequels you can play that are based on the main Call of Duty Series. Many of them are spin-offs in which a certain mode on one original game has been expanded into a full game of its own.

Call of Duty: Finest Hour

This game is a first-person shooter game that takes place during World War II. While it’s based on the original, it has six different storylines that act as an expansion to the main game.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One

This release came out for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. It’s a sequel to the original Call of Duty 2. It focuses on the Allied US Army 1st Infantry Division formation during World War II, nicknamed the Big Red One because their unit patch is a large red number one.

Call of Duty: Roads to Victory

This version was released for the PlayStation Portable. It’s a spin-off of Call of Duty 3. It follows the British, American, and Canadian troops in World War II. You can play with up to six players wirelessly on nine different maps.

Call of Duty: World at War – Final Fronts

This game is the Call of Duty: World at War PlayStation 2 counterpart. It features its missions with the US troops in the Battle of the Bulge and the British troops on the Rhine River in Germany.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized

This game was developed with the Nintendo DS in mind. It features the same setting as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and has a lot of the same elements of gameplay, including vehicular missions and iron sights.

Call of Duty: Zombies

Call of duty ps4 games in order

This is a spin-off based on the zombie mode in Call of Duty: World at War. If you like fighting off zombies in your bunker while hiding from the Germans, you’ll die for this game. See what I did there?

Call of Duty: Black Ops – Zombies

Sequel to Call of Duty: Zombies, this game allows two or four-player co-op for both Android and iOS platforms. Hello, mobile zombies! Who doesn’t want to fight zombies on their cell phone while pretending like you don’t have more important things to do?

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified

This game takes place between Call of Duty: Black Ops and its sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops II. It was released on PlayStation Vita and didn’t ever get very good reviews. If you like glitches, poor enemy AI, and flawed multiplayer features, you’re welcome to give it a try.

Call of Duty: Strike Team

Another Android and iOS game, this one is a tactical shooter game with the ability to switch from first-person-shooter view to overhead-drone view. You can command your squad from the sky and enjoy the tactics that come along with positioning shooters on the map.

What Is Call of Duty?

Call of Duty is a first-person shooter franchise with over forty-two games on almost all consoles and platforms, including mobile. While the franchise originally had the player following British, American, and Canadian troops in World War II, it has expanded over time.

Now there are sequels, and spin-offs feature different settings such as the Cold War, modern times, futuristic warfare, and outer space. It’s a hugely popular game, but they didn’t always hit the mark on their releases.

The original series garnered critical acclaim and revolutionized the first-person shooter gaming style. But some games in the franchise are buggy, and there are a few that aren’t available anymore.

We can attribute a lot of this to secondary manufacturers who didn’t develop the first game but had licenses to produce expansions to the storyline. Nonetheless, it’s still a popular franchise with many well-loved games.

What Was the First Call of Duty?

The first Call of Duty was released for Microsoft Windows. It follows World War II warfare from the perspective of the American, British, and Soviet troops. It revolutionized first-person shooter games with its new AI-controlled allies to support the main player in missions.

The game was developed by a team of project leaders from the very successful Medal of Honor: Allied Assault game. Call of Duty won more than eighty Game of the Year awards and received excellent reviews.

It became popular very quickly, and less than a year later, an expansion pack was released. Call of Duty is now available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s now a part of a bigger franchise of sequels and spin-offs, of which many are loved and lauded.

Call of Duty gameplay is based on three different campaigns.

The American campaign follows Private Martin, who is a new enlisted soldier in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He needs help completing basic training at Camp Toccoa before the action moves to eight more solo missions.

The British campaign follows Sergeant Jack Evans and the 2nd Ox and Bucks Unit during Operation Tonga. Evans fights German soldiers to clear them out and then takes part in five more missions with various troops and squadrons.

The Soviet campaign follows Corporal Alexei Ivanovich Voronin during the Battle of Stalingrad, where he and his recruits cross the Volga River to force the Germans back. After that, he participates in nine more missions.

How Many Call of Duty Games Are There?

There are forty-two games in the entire Call of Duty franchise. Sixteen of them are included in the main series, including the Modern Warfare and Black Ops storylines.

There are eleven games in the expanded universe, including games with zombies, Modern Warfare spin-offs, and comic renditions of already existing versions.

Ten side sequels include storylines based on Modern Warfare, Black Ops, and the modes of gameplay they had in their main series versions.

Who Makes Call of Duty?

Call of Duty was created by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. Most of the games in the franchise were developed by either Infinity Ward or Treyarch, but some were developed by Gray Matter Interactive Studios and Amaze Entertainment.

There are still more games to come from Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, and Infinity Ward. Production interchanges each year between these three main producers. However, in the past, there have been many other developers of the Call of Duty games, some of which were successful, and some of which were not.

The developers continue to create new storylines with new release dates, so keep your eyes peeled for more enemies to defeat in new situations.

So Many People to Kill, So Little Time

Now that you know more about the Call of Duty games, it’s time to get your hands on one. Even if you don’t like the first one you try (and that’s pretty unlikely), you have plenty more in the franchise to choose from.

If you want to take a shot at the first-person shooter game that revolutionized first-person shooter games, Call of Duty is it. Grab your Mt. Dew and Twizzlers. It’s time to get shooting.
