Can I cash a check thats 2 years old?Personal, business, and payroll checks are good for 6 months (180 days). Some businesses have “void after 90 days” pre-printed on their checks. Most banks will honor those checks for up to 180 days and the pre-printed language is meant to encourage people to deposit or cash a check sooner than later.
Can you cash a check from years ago?In theory, checks never technically expire, since banks can cash them even after the typical six-month period. While you will have a tough time cashing a check that has been sitting around for several years, it is still possible.
What happens if you deposit an old check?Your bank may let you deposit the check, regardless of the issue date, but the issuing bank could still reject it. If this happens, the funds might be withdrawn from your account and you might have to pay a fee. The check could bounce.
How can I cash an expired check? If your check is expired, it's up to the bank's discretion if they cash it or not. If they decide to do so, they might contact the account holder for approval before cashing it. The best thing you can do in this situation is contact the issuer yourself and ask them to give you a new check.
