This easy air fryer hash browns recipe was an instant hit in my house. It brings back all the best memories of family vacations when I was a kid and tastes reminiscent of the iconic Waffle House hash browns. If you like frozen hash browns in the air fryer like the kind you get at McDonald’s, just wait until you try these. I’ve been experimenting with recipes a lot lately and this recipe for air fryer hash browns is easily one of the best I’ve tried so far. It’s beyond simple (great recipe for beginners!) and yields delicious crispy results. Don’t just take my word for it—try it out and see for yourself!

Key Ingredients

To bring these air fryer hash browns to life, all you need are a few simple ingredients.

  • Russet Potatoes: I’ve found the best results with Russet potatoes, but feel free to swap them out for Yukon Gold potatoes or save some time by using frozen hash browns instead.
  • Unsalted Butter: Melted butter adds a ton of rich, delicious flavor to this breakfast recipe! Make sure to use unsalted butter if you can to avoid overly salty hash browns. If you only have salted butter, reduce the amount of added salt accordingly.
  • Spices: I like to keep the spices simple with salt, pepper, and onion powder. However, you can also add garlic powder for some garlic flavor or smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
  • Cooking Spray: You don’t need much oil because we’re cooking these hash browns in the air fryer. A little cooking spray will give the hash browns some color and ensure that they don’t stick to the bottom of the air fryer basket.

How to Make Homemade Hash Browns

Want to learn how to make shredded hash browns in the air fryer? Just follow these simple steps:

Fill up a large bowl halfway with cold tap water, then shred the potatoes with a cheese grater over the water. Potatoes should fall directly into the water. Stir potatoes to loosen starch. Repeat one more time, then drain in kitchen towels, making sure to squeeze to remove excess water. Fluff potatoes with your hands to make sure they’re dry.

Spread potatoes evenly out on a greased air-fryer pan. Air-fryer at 400°F degrees, for 15 minutes until golden brown. You may need to add half the potatoes depending on the size of your air-fryer. Serve immediately.

Recipe Tips for Success

Who wants to make the best air fryer hash browns? Here are some of my top recipe tips for success to help make sure that happens:

  • Save some time. If you want to cut out a few steps, try swapping out the Russet potatoes for frozen shredded potatoes. Just make sure to thaw them first.
  • Switch up the spices. While I like to keep the spices super simple, you can easily add a few more to spice things up. Some great options include seasoning salt, garlic powder, chili powder, rosemary and cayenne pepper.
  • Add some cheese, please. Hash browns and cheese were born to be paired together. For a cheesy twist, try sprinkling some shredded cheddar cheese over the hash browns before the last few minutes of cooking to allow the cheese to melt into the potatoes. Just like grandma used to make ’em!
  • Bring on the heat. If you like a little heat with your potatoes, mix a dash of cayenne pepper into the spice mix or serve your hash browns with a few shakes of your favorite hot sauce.
