Estee lauder double wear foundation silicone or water based

The Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation is the best foundation for oily skin and can work for normal and combination ones too. I’ve tried many foundations and while some had advantages over the Double Wear, none were good enough as a full product to make me switch.

As a result, when Estée Lauder announced the Nude Water Fresh Double Wear foundation I knew I had to try it. Is it as good as the original Double Wear? Does it offer anything different? And could this lighter version be the answer to those finding the original Double Wear too drying?

Let’s find out!

Packaging

Both foundations come with an outer cardboard packaging which has the typical Estée Lauder branding and colour scheme, dark blue with gold. The only difference between the two is the height of the packaging being slightly taller for the Double Wear Nude whereas the original Double Wear is slightly wider.

It’s a similar story for the actual foundation packaging with again the only difference being the slightly taller Nude Double Wear bottle and slightly wider original Double Wear. Both foundations come in a simple but elegant and expensive looking and feeling, glass bottle and a gold metallic (thin metal that sits on plastic) cap. Neither come with a pump but you can buy one from Estée Lauder for £5. However, it’s really not necessary, it’s actually quite liberating to be able to use as much or as little foundation as you’d like. If you never used foundations without a pump, don’t worry, you will quickly get used to dispensing the exact amount you need.

Winner: Equal. Both bottles look beautiful and elegant and unless you’ve been using one of the two for a while, you’d have to do a double take to figure out which one is which.

Coverage

Despite the fact that the Nude Double Wear is marketed as a light to medium coverage foundation, I thought that it was mostly a medium coverage. However, it wasn’t as buildable as the original Double Wear which starts from a medium coverage as well but can be built to an almost full coverage with two layers. The Nude Double Wear is lighter to wear but the difference between the two foundations after two layers is smaller than expected, not what one would expect from the “Nude” naming.

Winner: The original Double Wear can give slightly more coverage.

Cost

Both foundations come in a 30mL bottle and both retail for the same price, £33.50.

One 30mL bottle of foundation will last you around 1-3 months of everyday usage, depending on how much you apply.

Winner: Equal.

SPF protection

The original Double Wear comes with SPF10 which is low and is one of its drawbacks, as it falls short from the minimum daily recommended SPF15.

The Nude Double Wear comes with SPF 30 and is therefore, easily superior. However, the Nude Double Wear doesn’t stick to the skin (at least on my oily skin) as well as the original and therefore, it comes off a lot more upon touch. This means that the SPF protection you will get might decrease throughout the day and might actually never end up being 30 to begin with.

Winner: The Nude Double Wear is the clear winner here with SP30.

Colour availability

The Estée Lauder Double Wear has an amazing 54 shade range with different skin tones and under tone combinations, something that very few foundation ranges have.

The Nude Double Wear also comes specified for different under tone combinations but only has a total of 39 shades. Although it is of course lower than the original, it is still a much higher number of shades than a lot of other foundations.

The original Double Wear initially came with a lower number of shades too, so if the Nude foundation is in demand, they might bring out more shades.

The good news is that if you’ve ever colour matched yourself to the original Double Wear, the Nude one follows the same naming system and the shades actually match. For example, I am a 1N2 Ecru in both. Easy!

Neither foundations oxidise significantly (all foundations darken a little when they dry but that’s not oxidation) and therefore, you do not need to buy a lighter shade.

Winner: The original Double Wear is hard to beat in this category.

Finish

This is essentially the main difference between the two Double Wear foundations.

The original Double Wear gives a matte finish and while it doesn’t look harsh it also doesn’t do much to help texture or pores (it doesn’t accentuate them either though). The Nude on the other hand, gives a semi-matte but more dewy finish that looks natural. It’s not an all out dewy result and you won’t hate it as much as an oily skin type, as it is just enough shininess to look like natural skin.

However, what you will hate is the fact that it comes off in contact with anything. For this reason, I wouldn’t use this foundation all over my face as it wouldn’t last all day and the coverage will decrease quickly. On the plus side, you can take advantage of the slightly dewy nature of it and use it around pores or texture to make it less visible.

I also experimented with a 50:50 and 75:25 original:nude mixture to see if I can use the best of both worlds, the slightly more natural dewy finish from the nude but the stick to the skin and all day flawless wear of the original. Sadly, this didn’t really work as well as I hoped, the foundation would still come off to the touch, but less.

The only solution for me as an oily skin type was to just use the Nude around pores to help hide them a little better with the dewiness. You do have to be a little careful though to apply the Nude in areas where the light would naturally hit the skin otherwise you will end up looking strange, with some matte and other random dewy patches. When used correctly though, you can give the matte original Double Wear a softer and more natural skin look (since our skin is naturally a little shiny). Alternatively, you can try using the Nude as a pore minimizer and then adding a layer of the original on top.

Winner: Equal. This depends on which finish you would like.

Blendability

Both foundations are very easy to blend and become one with the skin easily.

Winner: Equal.

Oil control

As expected, the original Double Wear is superior on this. It controls oils very well and it can be worn without a re-touch for 8-12 hours, depending on how oily you are, your skin care and makeup primer.

I’m not sure if the Nude was designed to be a full-out oily skin foundation but the fact that they also named it Double Wear and that it contains some absorbent ingredients suggests so.

Unfortunately, because the Nude is already a little shiny to begin with, it is much easier and quicker for the face oils to appear through. Additionally, because the Nude never fully sticks to the skin, it always comes off in contact, it becomes even worse when it’s worn for a while and more face oils are being produced.

Longevity

The original Double Wear survives 12 hours+ without needing re-touching even though I am oily, when I wear a mattifying day cream and the right primer. The Nude Double Wear on the other hand, doesn’t survive more than 6-8 hours max without heavy re-touching. Because the Nude already comes off in contact from the beginning, you can only imagine how much worse it becomes over time, especially if you produce oils, sweat or the environment is humid.

The Nude for me (or most oily types) is not an all-day wear foundation but rather one for short appearances, constant re-touching or as I mentioned in the Coverage section, a foundation to use only on specific spots to minimize the appearance of texture and pores.

In terms of actual product longevity, both foundations last for 24M.

Winner: The original Double Wear survives flawlessly for longer.

Transfer proof tests

The original Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation is the best foundation I found so far in terms of transfer on hands or clothes.

As I mentioned in the Coverage and Longevity sections, the Nude double wear is never transfer proof and comes off a little to the touch from the beginning. As expected, it becomes even more transferable with time, as face oils, sweat, rain or other humidity kicks in.

Winner: The original Double Wear is transfer proof.

Pore/texture hiding

The original Double Wear neither hides or accentuate pores, it just sits on the skin and around the pores if you don’t work it well in. This is the downside of all matte foundations. Use a pore minimizer primer if you want pore coverage.

The Nude Double Wear on the other hand, does give some pore and texture hiding because its end finish is a little dewy. That little dewiness really helps with minimizing pores and texture even if you don’t use a pore minimizer at all.

Winner: The Nude Double Wear minimizes pores and texture because of its dewy finish but bear in mind that because it doesn’t last long (see Coverage and Longevity sections), the effect can disappear quickly.

Practicality of use – user experience

Both foundations are easy to use and blend well. However, if you want to be super picky, the fact that the Nude one is more watery and therefore, thinner and more runny, it does make it a little more messy and harder to control pouring it out of the bottle without a pump. You might end up preferring using a pump with that one.

Overall, the original Double Wear is a lot more practical and the experience more positive as it sticks to the skin well, doesn’t budge with a little rain and doesn’t need re-touching for 12 hours + if you skincare and primer are on point.

Winner: The original Double Wear is overall more practical.

Smell

Both foundations have a subtle cosmetic scent but nothing specific. They neither smell bad or good and you probably won’t smell them at all unless you sniff the bottles. The original Double Wear smell was more intense but again nothing too strong, good or bad.

Winner: Equal. They both have a subtle cosmetic scent that is neither pleasant or unpleasant.

Oxidation

Neither foundation significantly oxidises. All foundations naturally darken a little when they dry, or after hours of wear as they become “dirty”. However, this behaviour is not exactly the same type of oxidation that makeup artists talk about. You will not need to purchase a lighter foundation shade for these foundations.

Winner: Equal.

Waterproofness

Neither foundation is fully waterproof but then again it really depends as to what you define as waterproof, there is a confusion amongst different brands and products.

The original Double Wear survives a bucket of water in the face, rain or a humid environment without separating or becoming patchy. However, it will slowly come off if it’s wet and you rub it. Patting is your friend!

The Nude on the other hand, was never really transfer proof to begin with and therefore, becomes even worse in contact with water of any form. It will need re-touching even without water and definitely in the presence of water.

Winner: The original Double Wear survives the elements well.

Here’s what Estée Lauder says about the Nude Double Wear:

Ingredients

Even though on first glance it might look like the two foundations are very similar, just different versions of each other, that is not the case at all. In fact, they might as well not have called the Nude a Double Wear as it is quite a different product. Perhaps this was a marketing decision because the original Double Wear has an established market already? Who knows but one thing is clear, the two foundations are not similar at all, neither ingredient-wise or function-wise. In fact, the Nude is only 45% or less, similar to the original Double Wear.

For starters, the original Double Wear contains 20 ingredients whereas the Nude contains 51! The original Double Wear contains 13 ingredients which will offer you some benefit, 1 potential negative and 4 irritants. The Nude on the other hand, contains 39 positive ingredients, 2 negatives and 5 potential irritants.

Overall, the Nude is more nutritious for the skin than the original Double Wear. Sadly though, as with many foundations that tend to go on the nutritious side, it does not completely stick to the skin and comes off in contact from the beginning of wear. This does limit any positive those ingredients might bring, as a foundation, no matter how nutritious, is useless if it doesn’t stay on the face.

The original Double Wear might not be that nutritious but it works and lasts all day. As much as I like nutritious makeup, in practice, as long as your skincare is on point, you don’t need the foundation to be nutritious.

To keep this article short, I am only listing the skin nourishing or skin positive/negative ingredients (or in this case ones that make the foundation function better in some way) and ignoring the ones that only play formulation purposes. Ingredient positives for the Estée Lauder Original Double Wear foundation:

1. Water based formulation.
2. Cyclopentasiloxane– A solvent that enhances fluidity and gives a silky feeling. It can also temporarily fill in wrinkles and creases. Can lock in water by forming a protective barrier on the skin.
3. Trimethylsiloxysilicate– A mild adhesive, making the foundation stick to your skin. Also helps form a protective barrier on the skin and minimises moisture loss. Weightless feeling.
4. Butylene Glycol– Skin conditioner that can also prevent moisture loss from the skin. Sometimes also used as fragrance.
5. Tribehenin– Skin conditioner and softener.
6. Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate– Skin conditioner good for sensitive skin.
7. Magnesium Sulfate– This compound serves more formulation purposes than skin care, like for example texture enhancer, bulking agent etc. However, it can also serve as anti-flammatory fighting acne and blemishes. Absorbs oils, good for oily skin.

9. Polymethylsilsesquioxane– Creates a lubricating, smooth, silky feel and increases the skin’s ability to repel water. Anti-caking agent.
10. Methicone– Skin conditioner. Also forms a film barrier for makeup to stick to, which can prevent sweat and oils from coming through. Also prevents water loss. Anti-static agent.
11. Xanthan Gum– Skin conditioner. Holds water and improves the shelf life of the product.
12. Alumina– Anti-caking agent that can also absorb oils.
13. Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate– Anti-oxidant to help maintain the product’s properties after being exposed to air.

6. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate – A UV absorber.
7. Dimethicone – Creates a barrier and can therefore protect the skin. Also acts as a skin conditioner. It leaves a silky feeling and can even fill in lines temporarily.
8. Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate – Skin conditioner.
9. Titanium Dioxide – A UV sunscreen.
10. C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate– A skin conditioner which primarily serves formulation roles such as being an anti-microbial preserving agent that can dissolve sunscreens.
11. Butylene Glycol – Skin conditioner that can also prevent moisture loss from the skin. Sometimes also used as fragrance.
12. Zinc Oxide – A UV sunscreen.
13. Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone– A skin conditioner.

15. Glycerin – Found naturally in the skin so can be seen as a skin replenishing ingredient. A skin conditioner that helps improve and smooth the appearance of skin. A good moisturiser that is almost always present in moisturising products.

17. PEG-10 Dimethicone – Skin conditioner and emollient.
18. Litchi Chinensis Seed Extract – A skin conditioner.
19. Laminaria Saccharina Extract – Skin protecting, soothing and fragrance.
20. Polyglutamic Acid – A skin conditioner and moisturiser said to be better than hyaluronic acid and collagen. Effective at low concentrations and biodegradable.
21. Lens Esculenta (Lentil) Fruit Extract– A skin conditioner and anti-oxidant. Some claim that one of the ingredients in the lentil extract can minimise the appearance of pores.
22. Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract – Skin conditioner and replenisher.
23. Thermus Thermophillus Ferment – Skin conditioner and anti-oxidant. Said to prevent signs of photo-ageing.
24. Citrullus Vulgaris (Watermelon) Fruit Extract – A skin conditioner that also contains anti-oxidants.
25. Sodium Hyaluronate – A hero compound, known as the “fountain of youth” molecule. Plays a major role in anti-ageing processes and is found in embryos in high concentrations. Can hold onto water 1000 times of its weight meaning that it is an amazing moisturiser by locking moisture in. Helps wounds and burns heal and it’s linked to increased collagen generation Also used as a temporary cosmetic filler.
26. Sodium Lactate – Skin conditioner and humectant.
27. Glycine Soja (soybean) Protein – A skin conditioner that contains amino acids, minerals and vitamins.

Ingredient negatives for the Estée Lauder Original Double Wear foundation:

1. Alumina– Although it is approved by the FDA and BDIH, the metal itself can bioaccumulate and it is a neurotoxin. However, it is believed that it does not penetrate the skin.

Ingredient negatives for the Estée Lauder Nude Double Wear foundation:

1. Glycine Soja (soybean) –While some consider it to be useful against cancer, others believe it to be carcinogenic and an endocrine disruptor.
2. Lecithin– Generally considered safe but some suspect this to be a carcinogen. However, there is no proof.

Ingredients that can cause irritation to some:

This is actually really case specific, as different people have different sensitivities and allergies. Just because a compound has been reported by some to cause sensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will have an issue. “Sensitizer” compounds being present is not a negative in my opinion, as this is the case with pretty much everything out there and funnily enough I’ve seen products that are targeted specifically for sensitive skin, containing some compounds that have been reported by some, or are known to be, sensitizers.

If you have sensitive skin or you are prone to skin sensitisation and unwanted reactions, try a little bit of this at the back of your hand first and consult a medical doctor if you are concerned.

Verdict

The original Double Wear foundation is such a hit that it is very, very difficult to replace or even compete with. While the two foundations come with a very similar name, they are actually different enough to have been two separate, completely unrelated products.

If you have oily skin the original Double Wear is still the one to go for but if you struggle with texture, pores and you don’t like the harshness of a matte foundation, you could use the dewiness of the Nude in certain areas.

The Nude is not a foundation that would last long for the oily skin type, although out of the dewy type foundations it’s not the worst. I would only try the Nude if you find the original Double Wear too heavy for you, BUT the fact that it is never fully transfer proof is a major no no for me. However, this might be partly due to my oily skin, I’d be interested to know if you have dry skin and this foundation doesn’t transfer.

All and all, the original Double Wear is still the one worth your time and money.
