The Estee Double Wear Foundation is one of my favourite foundations of all time.  This foundation is a medium to full coverage but is also buildable into a fuller coverage.  It blends so nicely with a beauty blender or a foundation brush. In this Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation Review, I’ll go into detail WHY this foundation is a holy grail and why everyone should have it in their makeup kit, especially for beginners.

Estee Lauder is known for their Double Wear foundation and that is one of their best selling makeup bases. 

The shade I wear is ‘Cool Bone’ and it is the perfect match for my fair skin.  

I love the quality of Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation for so many reasons which I will explain below.

I always use this foundation when I’m going somewhere fancy such as a wedding or a night out.  It is a matte finish but it evens out my skin flawlessly.

Some of you may be saying that Estee Lauder is your mom’s brand.  I used to believe that until I felt the quality of this brand.  

The Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation actually lasts all day and doesn’t crease into fine lines and wrinkles. If you also have some pock marks in your skin from acne scars, the foundation will help fill in those holes and make your skin look flawless.

Does the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation Make You Look Cakey?

You may have heard that long wear or medium to full coverage foundations can make you look cakey.  This means that it makes you look like you’re wearing a lot of foundation and can flake off from your skin after applying.  This isn’t the case with the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation.  I have never felt that I have looked cakey with this foundation. 

I have had other medium to full coverage foundations make me look cakey but this one certainly does not which may be the reason why I love it so much.  If you check out my review of the Hourglass Vanish Seamless Liquid Foundation here, now THAT made me look cakey.  I find that the quality of Estee Lauder as a brand and company is quite good and since it has been around for a long time you can trust this name and brand.

What skin type works best with the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation?

I find that all skin types can work well with the Double Wear. 

I have acne prone skin and I find that the foundation does help to cover my problem areas without enhancing them.  It also covers redness well because it is more of a thicker formula.

If you have oily skin you should absolutely try this foundation because it is going to work well with your skin type.

If you have dry skin you can STILL use this foundation.  I find that this works for all skin types so please don’t worry if you have problem skin this is one of the best foundations on the market!

You may be asking what is the best way to get an exact foundation color match. 

The foundation comes in a shade range of 56 shades! Honestly, it is incredible about how much they have expanded their shade range.  If you visit any Sephora, you can do a skinIQ test to find your perfect shade.

The Best Way To Apply the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation

I go back and forth between using a beauty blender and a foundation brush to apply my foundation.  I find that with the Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation it is best applied with a slightly damp beauty blender.  Sometimes I use my fingers but I find that the dampness of the beauty blender helps to blur the particles so I get an even application.

Best Primers to Pair Up With Estee Lauder Double Wear

Since the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation is matte, if you pair it with a matte primer you’re going to get a very flat and non-dimensional look.  

My favourite primer to wear with the Double Wear Foundation is the Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer.

I really like this primer because it is super moisturizing so it ends up giving off a dewy a glow under the matte finish of the Double Wear.  You can also use any illuminating primer but water based is probably your best bet.

You may be wondering what the best dupes are for the Double Wear Foundation.  There are a lot of beauty brands trying to find a similar formula to the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation.  I have been able to find a few dupes of the foundation which I will share with you below. 

Smashbox Studio Skin Full Coverage 24 Hour Foundation

The Smashbox Studio Skin Full Coverage 24 Hour Foundation is quite close if you’re looking for a full coverage foundation.However, I find that this foundation looks more cake-y than the Estee Lauder Double Wear.  The Smashbox Full Coverage goes on smoothly no doubt but I did start to see creases in the foundation mid-way through the day.  I did a full wear test (although not 24 hours because who wears foundation for that long?!) and I found that my Estee Lauder Double wear actually wears a lot better over time.

Verdict: If you’re going to choose one, go with the Estée Lauder Double wear Foundation vs. Smashbox Studio Full Coverage 24 Hour Foundation.

Maybelline Matte and Poreless Foundation

I bought the Maybelline Matte and Poreless Foundation as an alternative to the Estee Lauder Double Wear because I loved it so much that I didn’t want to use it up too fast! I wanted an everyday foundation that wasn’t as fancy but still gave me the same effect.

The Maybelline Matte and Poreless is a thinner version of the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation.  By this I mean that the Maybelline Matte and Poreless isn’t as thick so it makes applying the foundation quicker which makes my mornings faster.

Even though I love the Estee Lauder Double Wear, I don’t always want a full coverage look and I found that the Maybelline Matte and Poreless gave me a similar look that was quicker to apply.

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte

The L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation is one of the best matte drugstore foundations. In fact, L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte is one of the most highly recommended foundations ever that you shouldn’t even need to buy any luxury matte foundations.

My favourite is the Maybelline Matte and Poreless foundation however if you’re looking for one singular pick.

NARS Soft Matte Complete Foundation

The NARS Soft Matte Complete Foundation is most similar to Estee Lauder Double Wear that I have found in 2021. The NARS foundation is a bit thinner with the Estée Lauder Double Wear and it goes on in the same way.

The NARS Soft Matte Complete Foundation also blends really well with your fingers whereas I recommend using a dense foundation brush with the Estee Lauder Doublewear.

I did do a video on TikTok where I wore them on each side of my face and you couldn’t tell the difference between the two.

Honestly, if you already have Estee Lauder Doublewear there’s no reason to get the NARS Soft Matte.

Is Estee Lauder Double Wear Water Based?

The Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation is water based. It is not silicone free unfortunately.

Does Estee lauder Double Wear foundation oxidize?

I did not find that that the Double Wear Foundation oxidized at all.  In fact, I found that it kept the same shade throughout a 12 hour day.  If you have this foundation for a long time past the expiry date you may find that it does oxidize but be sure to check how long you have had it for. 

Does Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation cause breakouts?

I have acne prone skin and I did not find that the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation caused breakouts.  In fact, I find that this foundation covered up my acne very well and didn’t cause me to break out further.  If you choose a full coverage, sometimes the makeup is so thick that it doesn’t let your skin breathe but since this is a medium coverage and a high quality makeup then I would say that this is the best foundation for acne prone skin. 

The Double Wear Foundation is oil-free and oil-controlling so it is good for oily skin.  If you get acne because of oily skin then you will want to choose this foundation.  It is also non-acnegenic and dermatologist tested so again, this foundation will not cause acne. 

Does Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation have sunscreen?

The Double Wear foundation does not have sunscreen or an SPF.  You’ll want to choose a light weight moisturizer that is water based or a daily sunscreen before you apply this foundation. 

Does Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation have flashback?

I have used the Double Wear Foundation for photoshoots for my engagement shoot before and I can tell you that it does not have flashback.  Since this is a matte foundation, you will not get shine coming through.  The best way to apply the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation is to start at the middle of your face and apply outward.  This way, you won’t end up looking too matte or flat in your photos.  You could also use a damp beauty blender instead of a brush to get a more dimensional look!

How long does Estee Lauder Double wear foundation last?

The foundation is supposed to last up to 24 hour wear.  However, I don’t know anybody who wears foundation for 24 hours but this makes for the perfect option for the best wedding or bridal foundation.  For example, I wore this makeup for a wedding once and after 12 hours I still had to use a makeup remover and a cleanser to get all of the makeup off!

Is Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation non comedogenic?

Yes! If you read above if the foundation is ok for acne prone skin it is one of the best non comedogenic foundations out there! It is actually non-acnegenic meaning that it won’t cause acne or clog pores.  If you have acne you are safe with this foundation!

Why is Estée Lauder So Expensive?

Estée Lauder is so expensive because it is a special makeup or luxury makeup brand. You can buy Estée Lauder at places that have a makeup counter such as Hudson’s Bay or even Shoppers Drug Mart. You can also buy Estée Lauder at Sephora but you’ll see this under the luxury beauty section.

The reason why Estée Lauder is so expensive is that the foundation and products are really high quality. The double wear foundation even though there are dupes, really lives up to its name and the quality of the ingredients are top notch.

Estée Lauder is similar to Lancome in that they cater to a target audience that is relatively the same. Estée Lauder focuses on having a great foundation and the same goes for Lancome. Then they have a lot of makeup but it tends to lean toward skincare as well. The price point is similar as well as the quality so if you like one brand you’ll generally like the other.
