Your Facebook timeline is likely to be inundated with posts that are not of your own making. That's not necessarily a good thing; you don't want your boss seeing a picture of your night out at the weekend, or your mum tagging you in an embarrassing photo.

If you want to keep some control over your Facebook wall, it's important to know how to stop people posting on your timeline. In this article, we show you how to block a person from posting on your Facebook wall without unfriending them, and more besides.

If you want to prevent other Facebook users from posting on your Timeline, you need to enter your account settings and tweak a few things. Just follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on the arrow in the upper right-hand corner of the Facebook homepage.
  2. In the dropdown menu, click on Settings.
  3. Using the panel on the left-hand side of the screen, navigate to the Timeline and Tagging section.
  4. Scroll down and locate Timeline > Who can post on your timeline.
  5. Click on Edit.
  6. To lock down your timeline, choose Only Me. Doing so will not affect your friend status with any other users.

The same section also lets you adjust who can see your timeline, edit who can share your timeline posts, and block certain offensive words from your timeline.

Finally, in the Review section, it's worth checking the following settings:

  • Review posts that you're tagged in before the posts appear on your timeline.
  • Review what other people see on your timeline.
  • Review tags that people add to your posts before the tags appear on Facebook.

Turning on the three options will give you even more control over what content appears on your Facebook timeline. And if you want to go a step further, here's how to disable algorithmic feeds on social media accounts for an even more clutter-free Facebook experience.

Maintaining a professional public image often means controlling access to private information on your Facebook Timeline. By default, your Facebook Timeline and all of your information is public. But if you're willing to navigate through Facebook's maze of privacy settings, you can hide almost all of your Timeline to everyone but your friends. The only thing you can't hide is your Facebook name and profile picture.

  1. Click the gear-shaped icon on the Facebook toolbar, and then select "Privacy Settings" to open the Privacy Settings and Tools page.

  2. Change who can see any future posts you make by clicking the "Edit" link next to "Who Can See Your Future Posts?" Activate the drop-down menu and select "Friends," "Only Me" or "Custom." The "Friends" option makes it so that only people on your friends list can see your Timeline posts. The "Only Me" option hides your posts from everyone, even your friends, while the "Custom" option allows to you to specify which friends can see your posts.

  3. Change the privacy setting of the old posts on your Timeline by clicking the "Limit Past Posts" link. Click the "Limit Old Posts" button in the pop-up window, and then click "Confirm" to make it so that only friends can view the posts.

  4. Click the "Timeline and Tagging" tab in the left sidebar to change who can see your friends' posts on your Timeline. Click the "Edit" links next to "Who Can See Posts You've Been Tagged In on Your Timeline" and "Who Can See What Others Post on Your Timeline," and change both setting to "Friends," "Only Me" or "Custom," depending on your preferences.

  5. Switch to your Timeline page to begin hiding other information from public view. Click the "Update Info" button to display the different categories of personal information in your About section, such as your employer, education, relationships and contact information. Click the "Edit" button on each category, and then change the privacy settings for each item.

  6. Scroll down through all of the other sections displayed on the page, such as Photos, Friends, Likes, Books and Movies. On each section, click the pencil-shaped icon and select "Edit Privacy" from the drop-down menu, and then change the privacy settings to your liking. In the Photos section, you must select the "Albums" link and then adjust the privacy of each individual album. The Places and Notes sections don't have an "Edit Privacy Option," but you can choose "Hide Section" to remove them from your Timeline.
