When you change your refrigerator water filter, there are two additional steps that should be taken to properly complete the water filter change.

How to reset order filter light on whirlpool refrigerator

Step 1: Reset your refrigerator water filter change light.

Most new refrigerators are designed with an indicator light that notifies you when it’s time to change your water filter. This light will not automatically reset when you change your water filter, so you must manually reset it.

For most refrigerators, the filter change light is on a timer ranging from 6-18 months. The change filter light is not an indication of the quality of your filter. We recommend changing your refrigerator filter at least every 6 months to ensure that you have purified, great-tasting water at all times.

Here is a list of how to reset the filter change indicator light based on your refrigerator’s manufacturer:

  • Amana Refrigerator: Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
  • Frigidaire Refrigerator: Press Options button until they all show, then scroll to water filter and hold set button to reset do the same for the air filter.
  • General Electric or GE Refrigerator: Press and hold the Reset Button for at least 8 Seconds.
  • HotPoint Refrigerator: Press and hold the Reset Button for at least 8 Seconds.
  • Jenn-Air Refrigerator: Press and hold the Water and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
  • Kitchen Aid Refrigerator: Press and release the Light Button 5 times quickly.
  • Maytag Refrigerator: Press and hold the Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
  • Samsung Refrigerator: Press and hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.
  • Whirlpool Refrigerator: Press and release the Light Button 5 times quickly.

Step 2: Flush a couple of gallons of water through your new filter.

Refrigerator water filters are made of carbon media, and some carbon dust will likely be in your water the first few times you dispense it. Is drinking carbon dust bad for you? Drinking carbon flecks will not harm you, but will make your water taste a bit bitter. If you continue to see carbon floating in your water after flushing a couple of gallons through the filter, it is possible that you have a defective water filter.

Once you complete the two steps, you can start enjoying great-tasting ice and water through your refrigerator. If your refrigerator’s brand is not listed or the instructions don’t work for your model, we would recommend checking your refrigerator owner’s manual for instructions.

Can’t find what you need? Feel free to post a comment with the make and model number of your refrigerator and we would be happy to try and help you find the right instructions for your model.

Where is the reset button on a Whirlpool refrigerator?

Locate the reset button on the bottom of the ice maker. Press and hold the reset button for about ten seconds. Once you hear a chime (or the ice maker turning on again), let go of the button. If your unit doesn't have a reset button, find the on/off switch and turn the machine off.

Why is my water filter light still on?

There is a very slim chance of a water filter being defective. Instead, the most common reasons are that the change light needs to be reset. Typically, this light is a timer meant to remind you to change your filter every 3 to 6 months.
