What's the difference between a counselor and a therapist?

Counselors tend to offer short-term care, while therapists tend to offer long-term care. Therapists can be more past focused and counselors more future focused. Counselors often have a set number of sessions, and therapists often work on an ongoing basis. Therapists are more likely to treat mental health conditions.

How do I get my LPC license in Maryland?

Maryland requires aspiring LCPCs to complete a number of supervision hours respective to their degree: Master's Degree: Three years with at least 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience in professional counseling under an approved supervisor. Of those three years, two must be post-degree.

Do you need a license to be a therapist in Maryland?

Most types of professional counseling in Maryland require licensure to practice. A master's degree is usually the minimum education required, and most types of licenses require that you take a national exam and complete a certain number of supervised experience hours.

Can licensed professional counselors diagnose in Maryland?

Once you become an LCPC you can engage in the practice of professional clinical counseling independently, which includes: Diagnosis and treatment of emotional or mental conditions. Prevention of psychological problems. Treatment of individuals and groups.
