What Is Polytrim?

Polytrim (polymyxin B sulfate and trimethoprim ophthalmic solution) is an antibiotic indicated in the treatment of surface bacterial infections of the eye, including acute bacterial conjunctivitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis, caused by susceptible strains of the following microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus viridans, Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Polytrim is available in generic form.

What Are Side Effects of Polytrim?

Common side effects of Polytrim include:

  • eye irritation (redness, burning, stinging, or itching), and
  • hypersensitivity reactions (eyelid swelling, itching, increased redness, tearing, or rash)

Dosage for Polytrim

In mild to moderate infections, instill a dose of one drop of Polytrim in the affected eye(s) every three hours (maximum of 6 doses per day) for a period of 7 to 10 days.

Polytrim may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Polytrim During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Polytrim; it is unknown how it would affect a fetus. It is unknown if Polytrim passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

SIDE EFFECTS

The most frequent adverse reaction to POLYTRIM® Ophthalmic Solution is local irritation consisting of increased redness, burning, stinging, and/or itching. This may occur on instillation, within 48 hours, or at any time with extended use. There are also multiple reports of hypersensitivity reactions consisting of lid edema, itching, increased redness, tearing, and/or circumocular rash. Photosensitivity has been reported in patients taking oral trimethoprim.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Adult dosage

  • Instill 1 drop in affected eye(s) every 3 hours for 7-10 days; not to exceed 6 doses/day

  • Children above 2 years: Instill 1 drop in affected eye(s) every 3 hours for 7-10 days; not to exceed 6 doses/day

Cautions

  • Not for injection into the eye
  • Not indicated for prophylaxis or treatment of ophthalmia neonatorum
  • Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
  • Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with material from the eye, fingers, or another source
  • If redness, irritation, swelling, or pain persists or increases, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention
  • Advise patient not to wear contact lenses with active signs and symptoms of ocular bacterial infections or while using antibacterial eyedrops
