Can i get a copy of my dot medical card online

Whenever a CDL is issued, a driver’s license examiner will ask the CDL driver to self-certify to the category designation that applies to him or her. The first step is to determine if he/she is an interstate or intrastate driver. If someone is new to the transportation industry, that person should decide which category they expect to be engaged in. This step is important because it affects the self-certification.

The driver must select which one of the four categories applies to them. The categories are:

Nonexcepted interstate: This driver conducts interstate commerce and must have a Medical Examiner’s Certificate per federal regulation. The certificate must be placed on file with the Iowa DOT under the new regulations.

Excepted interstate: This driver conducts interstate commerce, but is involved in one of the several transportation activities that have a federal exception from the medical requirements (49 CFR parts 390.3(f), 391.2, 391.68, and 398.3).

Nonexcepted intrastate: This driver conducts intrastate commerce within the state of Iowa and must have a Medical Examiner’s Certificate per Iowa Code 321.449 and 321.450. The certificate does not have to be on file with the Iowa DOT.

Excepted intrastate: This driver operates within the state of Iowa, but is excepted from medical requirements per Iowa Code 321.449 and 321.450.

So we obviously have to get an exam but carrying paper documentation isn’t required? That would make sense as one can’t get an active CDL without one and I assume all States require you provide them supporting documentation to get/keep your CDL.

The answer is the same. Now that med cards are tied to CDL's, they aren't required to be carried any longer. It's best practice to carry it for when an officer asks for it. If you don't have it the most they can do is hold you for a reasonable time (most courts have stated over 15 minutes in unreasonable) while they verify.

Here's the regs from 391.41.

(2) CDL/CLP exception. (i)(A) Beginning on January 30, 2015 and through June 21, 2021, a driver required to have a commercial driver's license under part 383 of this chapter, and who submitted a current medical examiner's certificate to the State in accordance with 49 CFR 383.71(h) documenting that he or she meets the physical qualification requirements of this part, no longer needs to carry on his or her person the medical examiner's certificate specified at §391.43(h), or a copy, for more than 15 days after the date it was issued as valid proof of medical certification.

(B) On or after June 22, 2021, a driver required to have a commercial driver's license or a commercial learner's permit under 49 CFR part 383, and who has a current medical examiner's certificate documenting that he or she meets the physical qualification requirements of this part, no longer needs to carry on his or her person the medical examiner's certificate specified at §391.43(h).

As a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holder, you are required to submit a medical report dated within the last two years, every two years. You are required to submit:

  • A valid (original or copy) federal MER MCSA-5875 form
  • Medical Examiner’s Certificate Form, (MEC) MCSA-5876

These forms need to be completed by a United States (U.S.) licensed doctor of medicine (M.D.), licensed doctor of osteopathy (D.O.), licensed physician’s assistant (P.A.), registered advanced practice nurse (APN), or licensed doctor of chiropractic when you apply for a DL or learner’s permit.

Drivers who hold certificates to drive school buses, School Pupil Activity Bus Certificate (SPAB), youth buses, General Public Paratransit Vehicle (GPPV), or farm labor vehicles must have their medical examinations given by doctors of medicine, licensed physician’s assistant, registered advanced practice nurse, or a chiropractor who is listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (CVC §12517.2)

All CDL holders have to certify driving type and, if required, keep a valid medical card on file with Georgia Department of Driver Services. Your certification of driving type tells DDS which qualifications you must meet to hold a CDL.

  • Non-Excepted Interstate (NI)
You must meet FMCSA driver qualification requirements.
  • Non-Excepted Intrastate (NA)
You must meet the medical requirements for Georgia.

If your medical examiner’s certificate is only valid with a vision, diabetes or a skills performance evaluation variance granted by FMCSA, you will also be asked by the DDS to provide a copy of that variance document. If you have a vision waiver granted by the DDS you will be required to provide a copy of that variance document.

CDL holders can no longer claim exemption from medical certification requirements because they are not currently operating in non-excepted interstate or intrastate commerce. If not specifically included above, they must maintain their medical certification or certify into an Excepted category.

If CDL holders are required to provide a medical certification then they must continue to carry all medical certification documents with them at all times even after completing the self-certification process with DDS.

Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS

The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.

The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.

ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.
